are you saying that you have contacted and rejected the

doctors/clinics already recommended to you when you asked us this

before? You need more names, or what? You keep sending this message

but other than what you've already gleaned from folks here, we've no

clue how to help you if all you do is to repeat the same basic plea.

Did you contact already the recommended places?

If you want the best, go to Dr. Coon in Red Bluff, CA or his St. Helena office.

He only does knees, has done 4,000 of the procedure he designed, the quad

sparing MIS. People fly to him from all over the US and overseas. He teaches

in Europe and has understudy surgeons from all over the US.

I just had my second TKR with him. His procedure does not cut any quad

ligaments, tendons or the muscle so a patient has their quad strength back

immediately. Hospital stay is less than 24 hours and you walk out. The first

surgery I walked out unaided, the second, 5 days ago, I used a walker but am now

walking on my own around the house.

You never have to go back to him for follow up visits, you can just send XRays

and talk to him by email or phone.

I realize you live in Florida, but I live in California and flew to South

Carolina twice to have my hips resurfaced by a top doc there. To put your whole

future in the hands of a surgeon, I think it's mandatory to get the best.

His website is http://www.osiresearch.com/osi_website_121604_b_010.htm

Click on continue, then on interviews with Dr. Coon.

I have never found another surgeon who does quad sparing knee surgery and has

less than a 24 hour hospital stay. The less time spent in hospital, the lower

your risk of infection.

When I was surgeon shopping I interviewed with top surgeons in NYC, Belgium, So.

Carolina, 4 others here in California.

I think you'll find it a rarity for one knee surgeon to have done thousands of

knee (not hips and knees) procedures. There has been research done indicating

the surgeons with the highest volume of their procedures have the best results.

You can get a lot of free information regarding your particular condition by

emailing or calling his office, I also emailed digital XRays.

For both my So. Carolina surgeries and my Red Bluff surgeries, my insurance

covered, as if I was in my hometown. I have Blue Cross.

That's just it. There are no better orthopedic surgeons in that part of FL

than Jewett Orthopedic Clinic in Gainesville at the Univ of FL or Dr.

Dore in Celebration. She has asked the same question over and over. I

don't think she's contacted them. She won't find any better.

Hollie,

You have done your homework! Sounds like you feel same way about someone

cutting on your body as I do``I have seen Dr. Coon's name mentioned

before-I have not flown anywhere since about 1985 so that alone would be quite

an

adventure, but then again for a 24hr hospital stay I would do it. One of

my main worries is the length of time in the hospital for I HATE hospitals.

Surely am gonna check out the website & it sounds as tho it is just what I

want. Thanx sooo much for your help & advice-you're a lifesaver,

Chris

Start with the Florida docs suggested. That will eliminate the air travel

anxiety. But you have to go to an appt with a doc. You are shopping for the

right one. Give a short medical history (they'll ask), list of any meds you

take, including asprin, vitamins, etc. If you don't have current xrays, they'll

take them & give you copies / film to take with you. Visiting a doctor is not a

commitment to him or her. Nothing will change unless you actually go see

someone. What's the worst that can happen at an appt?: the doc says " I can't do

MIS " ? Now you know the worst that can happen. A visit is not surgery. It's just

a doctor consult. If you don't fell comfortable with a doctor? See another doc.

Don't like your plumber? Get another plumber. If there is no surgeon (or

plumber) anywhere that is a good fit? Perhaps there is something else holding

you back. Many of us have been there. And if you do nothing, what will happen?

For me, doing nothing was the worst that could happen. I had my first consult

with my eventual surgeon 9/07. Finally had the surgery 3/09. Good luck.

Well said. BOTH of these surgeons are nationally recognized/prominent. I

used to live in Orlando 2 yrs ago.I researched them myself. Their

reputations is impeccable.

I wish I would never have had hip/knee problems, but I do believe the choice of

surgeon is number 1 prioity. While surgeon shopping for my first hip, I fell

into a group of knowledgable, experienced people who still help me today. They

go to the orthopedic conferences, know the procedures backward and forward and

know the top US and overseas surgeons.

Good luck,

you had better be realistic. If you are having both knees replaced, you

are not going to be going in one day then flying home the next.

Bill in MN

BTKR, same procedure.

I didn't catch that you were having both knees done. Dr. Coon won't do bi-lats

on the same day, they must be at least 6 weeks apart. My second one was 6

months after the first, and I'm glad I waited until that knee was ready to be

the go-to knee on the second replacment.

Some docs prefer to do 1 TKR at a time. May do the second 6 weeks later. Have

known of a 4 to 5 day stay with bilateral. But first, have you made an

appointment to see anyone yet? That is the first step. It may be the hardest.

The second step is to GO to the appointment. That may be the 2nd hardest step.

It gets easier from there. Please tell us if you have either scheduled an appt.

or met with a doc. This group will support you each step. No need to mention the

practicioner, unless you want to. One step at a time. Remember, you are shopping

for a surgeon, not commiting to anyone by having an eval.

Make it easy on yourself, start shopping within driving distance. Then decide if

you need to travel further. You are the only one who can meet with a potential

surgeon for your surgery. Good luck.
