That surgeon said that he does knees that they are much easier than hips. I don't know what to do. My hip surgen was Moon @ Cedars, in Los Angeles. Has anyone heard of him? Any suggestions. Have you looked into the work done by Dr. Coon in Red Bluff CA. People speak very highly of him (low revision rate, low infection rate, has his own wing at the hospital he works at) and he uses the MIS Quad Sparing technique that allows some patients to walk unaided out of the hospital the next day. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2009 Report Share Posted April 10, 2009 They will get you up the morning after your surgery. They might switch you from the walker to crutches before the 10 days is up. They will show you how to maneuver the step into your shower once you go home.they'll wrap your leg so it won't get wet prior to that. You might want to invest in a shower seat.it just makes it a little easier at first although it's not required. If you stay at the hospital 10 days you'll be running laps around there.they'll move you right along and you'll do great. One of the big things is to take your pain medicine regularly at first and stay AHEAD of the pain.don't wait until you're hurting bad.also schedule your pain meds about 30 min before they're coming to get you for physical therapy. Do your exercises faithfully that they show you. I've gone home by myself most of the time and you find a way to do for yourself. You'll do great. Let me know what other questions you have. Guest guest Posted August 5, 2009 Report Share Posted August 5, 2009 HI Jim, Congrats on your upcoming new knee. I had my right knee surgery at Kaiser here in Oakland. Standard procedure was to discharge a few days after surgery. I think it was 3 nights in hospital ‹ surgery day, 2 days in hospital, and then discharged. If someone was doing exceptionally well they might discharge a day early and if the person needed more time they would wait. It does seem shocking ; but that worked for me. I was tired of being woken up for vital signs, medication and just because so glad to get out of there! I felt I had pretty good care but still home was better for me for healing. I went directly home and that is the standard of care unless there are special needs or are having difficulty with the early days of rehab. I met several people who had gone to rehab and they felt that was good for them. So either way works out well. Alas I have to do it all again. But I¹m ready ‹ this left knee needs some help and I¹m glad I¹m getting it. I¹ll look forward to your writing about your experience and sending you wishes both for a great surgery and rehab and that you never have to do it again. I am learning how to swim, my doctor gave me a few exercises and the trainer that I just happen to run into at the gym pointed me to two machines that are helping. But the best is one is when at work and talking on the phone to people, I am able to raise my foot off the ground for about 30 seconds or I count to 20 and I do this 5-7 times, I can feel it and I mean feel it. One thing that I found out at my pre-op appointment is that my left knee is now at 114 degree flexion; the last time I checked it was at 95. This gives me more hope for my newly done right knee. I hurt badly, but this time my body seems to respond to 1.5 norcos; last time I tried only 1 norco. I also rented a CPM machine. I am on my 4th day post surgery and am able to get the flexion to 80 and extension to 0. My surgeon doesn't believe in these machines but everybody I know who did well after surgery used one, at least for a couple of weeks. My insurance might cover it; I am waiting to hear from them. I have home health this time. Both the nurse and the PT who came to visit yesterday our surprised that my surgeon recommends walking 10-15 minutes every waking hour. They both were telling me to take it easy. I was wondering what others have heard about walking the first week post-surgery. There is a hole under my main incision that was used to line up the knee and it is still oozing. I have had to change my dressing 3X/day. Last time I had no oozing after the second day. I think that the oozing means that my lymph is draining better and that the swelling will go down sooner. In my first TKR, I was black and blue from my ankle to my thigh and this time I only have a little bruising comparatively. Blessings to all of you who are going through what I am going through.
