Guest guest
Welcome home Pam. I think you will find " Ice is your friend " . It will help with the swelling and the pain but don't forget to control that pain any way you can. Heal well, and look after yourself. Aussie Margaret RTHR 1990 revised 2004 I am home now | One week and a day after surgery! And I am at the computer! My husband | cleared a path for me and my walker so I could catch up a bit on | emails and such. | Surgery went well though I lost a lot of blood. In recovery I was | given 2 units of blood and they were concerned that my BP was too low. | Then went to my room, was treated wonderfully by the hospital staff. | My blood level went down more so a few days later I had 2 more units | so they kept me a extra few days to make sure BP was up and blood | level also. So all in all I spent 6 days in hospital to when insurance | came and and declared me cured! When I left the hospital I was able to | bend my knee at 90 on the CPM machine. And walk down and back in the | hallway. But oh the stiffness! | Had my staples out today all 28 of them! I start PT on Tuesday and do | my home exercises 2-3 times a day. | Does or did anyone have a lot of swelling? My skin is so tight it | feels like it could burst! | Well time to get out of chair and lay with leg straight. | Thank you all for all of the wonderful support you have given me! | pam |
Guest guest
Hi Pam, We had our surgeries on the same day, so we must be kindred spirits. Sorry you lost so much blood...........not a fun set back, but you are on your way now! I am finding that my stiffness tells me that it is time to do my 2 exercises for flexing and extending the leg. It's like my leg is talking to me and telling me what it needs! Be sure to do those home exercises! They will make PT so much better. My skin is tight too! The swelling is beginning to go down, especially in my foot and ankle! I keep massaging the leg, sometimes use body lotion, being careful not to get it in the stitched area. Keep in touch, Pam...Nan> One week and a day after surgery! And I am at the computer! Guest guest
So good that you are home, Pam. Yes, as Margaret suggested, use ice. Use a large bag of frozen peas or corn which are wonderfully flexible, or do your own with two ziplock bags, 3 parts water and 1 part rubbing alcohol. Will never freeze hard and stays flexible, easier to wrap around the knee. Feel better soon !! > > One week and a day after surgery! And I am at the computer! Guest guest
Hi Pam, I had a great deal of swelling. Actually my other knee is swollen also, so maybe I just have fat knees! Your body is reacting to the surgery and it takes awhile for your body to adapt. You may also find that the surgical site feels warm for quite awhile, which means the blood supply is increased to aid in healing. It sounds like you are doing well. I didn't have the CPM, but I can certainly see where it does a lot of good. It took me a long time to get to 90 degrees. As far as stiffness goes, I still get stiff occasionally, and my surgery was last September. I must say that now I hardly notice it and can walk on a treadmill and finally took the dog for a walk last night. Now that it's been quite awhile since I've had surgery, I'm really glad I did it. Guest guest
HI, That is neat! surgery buddies LOL...My foot is very swollen and my upper thigh...still have some numb areas from the femoral block. Sometimes it wakes up and feels like bees are stinging me there. Been doing the exercises...each day I can can do a bit more with less pain or help. DO you find night time the worst time? I get a spasm that goes along my outside calf under my knees and then to my thigh. Wakes me up and hard to get relief. Finally had to elevate for the night on a pillow to get relief.(5am to 9am) My staples are out and now just the strips..the incision is healing fast. Well need to get off the leg and ice it. Good luck! pam
Guest guest
I had lots of swelling and used lots of ice. At your point post-surgery I also was still wearing the TED hose. -----Original Message-----From: Joint Replacement [mailto:Joint Replacement ]On Behalf Of pamSent: Friday, June 22, 2007 6:18 PMJoint Replacement Subject: I am home now One week and a day after surgery! Guest guest
So happy you are home. I did have the CPM machine. I sleep like the dead, so I had it running all night. Just take a pain pill and out like a light. I loved that machine. I think it got me going so quickly. In fact, I was on it immediately after surgery. My brother in law did not have one and never heard of one, and he did fine also. Guess it all depends on the person. Lynn Be a better Heartthrob. Guest guest
I didn't have the CPM machine and did great. My doctor and the hospital I went to believe that active motion is better than passive. They had me doing a lot of PT. Seems to me that either way works! Darlene -- Re: I am home now So happy you are home. I did have the CPM machine. I sleep like the dead, so I had it running all night. Guest guest
Congrats, Pam! Glad to know it went so well, and that the blood loss got under control. It sure seemed to me that I lost a lot through the drain tube, but that wasn't whole blood, I'm told. Keep up the good work and attitude! Guest guest
So glad that your surgery was successful. Yes indeed, keep flexing that leg. I surely do wish my knee had had a better attitude right after surgery. Mine definitely wanted to remain a couch potato. For you and Pam both, don't overdo. I was really surprised at how much less stamina I had. Before surgery, I could sit at the computer for hours, but after, I could barely last 20 minutes. Give it time, and you will both be back to pre-surgery stamina, and it's so much better without the bone on bone pain! Guest guest
My son too had a high bilirubin and it helped taking him out into direct sunlight a couple times a day for about 10 minutes at a time (even the doc suggested this.) Unfortunately it is winter so there may not be too much sunlight right now. Good luck with everything and congratulations. > > I went into natural labor Saturday night.. everything stalled by early > Sunday and I spent the day trying to get it started again.. we induced > at 4 pm Sunday b/c I already had my IV and I was not going to do that > again!! Guest guest
Venita, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles... DEMAND that you breastfeed on demand for both of your sakes. He is A+ so there is no ABO incompatibility problem. Nursing more frequently, adding lemon water to your diet, and getting some sunlight for him (you can even do it through a window) will help with the jaundice. Hope this helps! Crystal I am home now I went into natural labor Saturday night.. everything stalled by early Sunday and I spent the day trying to get it started again.. we induced at 4 pm Sunday b/c I already had my IV and I was not going to do that again!! He was born at 5:27 pm Sunday. Monday at 1 pm they took him for light therapy. They said he was coombs positive and his bilirubin was 8 some4thing and it's now climbed to 11.4 and he's still at the hospital and I'm home. They only let me feed him 1/2 hour every feeding session, 2, 5, 8, 11 and then daddy gets 1/2 hour of formula feeding time to push the volume of food up. What remedy works to lower the bilirubin so I can take him home and no, I'm not planning on telling them I'm giving it to him. He was a good sized baby: 20 inches long, 38 weeks (by my LMP, 37.5 or so by the sonogram from the hospital at 20 weeks), 8-8 in weight. He's A + blood (I'm O neg). he did not get the vita K shot or the hep shot. I found one article on line about rhogam, they mentioned by it name brand so I assume it was a " toot our own horn " but it said that it helps avoid the ABO incompatibility... I haven't had this problem before.. too late now to wonder if I should have had the rhogam at 28 weeks but I didn't want the mercury in me. I'm very upset about all this, I still have a clogged duct and my milk is not in yet (duh! I hardly have been able to nurse my baby!), I started a dose of hepar S today again for the duct and some lecithin and I'm going to put some arnica cream on it. I was able to pump some colostrums out of my right side, it's doing OK. It's the left side that is having the duct problem, 3 weeks now. So sorry for all the trouble he's having at the moment though. :-( I can guarantee you, that if you'd gotten the shot at 28 weeks he'd still be having this problem now. Guest guest
" sunlight " lamps apparently work well. My son was jaundiced when he was born (but not severely enough that they kept him). He was still a bit yellow when I took him home. I have one of those sunlight lamps near my bed and used that when nursing (didn't think anything of it) and the next doc visit all yellowness was gone and they asked me about it...only then did it occur to me that the lamp had fixed the problem. > > I went into natural labor Saturday night.. everything stalled by early > Sunday and I spent the day trying to get it started again.. we induced > at 4 pm Sunday b/c I already had my IV and I was not going to do that > again!!
