I don't know why, but my surgeon told me not to use neosporin. He told me to leave it uncovered and in a few days to start rubbing the oil from vitamin E capsules on it.

Hi everyone,I had my staples removed 9 days ago. TKR was on May 2. The last of the steri-strips fell off today. All of the scabs came off but there are a couple of places that aren't quite healed/closed yet.Should I put anything on these places? Should I cover them with some kind of dressing? Everything looks good and I sure don't want it to get infected. Thanks!Jan

Okay I will put on Neosporin. Did you cover it with anything?

What caused yours to get infected?

Thanks,

Jan

I would cover some parts (the parts that looked worse) with band-aids. I think it got infected by chance. The upper part of my incision was like a big pit where I guess the staples didn't go together perfectly and that area got red and infected. I took antibiotics, which gave me hives and then I took steroids which made me crazy but my knee did great with those.

Then use the E oil. But I'm not sure why not to use Neosporin as it contains only E oil and topical antibiotics and other healing oils. The main thing is not to let it stay soaking in water.

Hi Jan.......I had a hip resurface 9 months ago with a fourteen inch

incision....the doc used dissolvable stitches to close the wound and alos

i had steri strips put over those.....If i were you, i would keep the

area that has not closed or healed surrfciently, i would buy more steri

strips to keep the wound together....I also used Tegederm to cover the

wound and keep it dry when i showered until it was healed. I never

put any ointments or vitamin E on it....the scar looks like a penicl

line now.....

I wa told to make sure that I kept the incision dry and NOT to even

get it wet batging or showering and to use a sterile breathable

adhesive surgical dressing over it to make sure that no bactreia got

into it. I dont know if you have the same type of sterile medical

adhesive surgical dressings as we have here in UK but the one I used

was called ''Mepore'' which you can get in various sizes, they have a

medical pad in the centre and the edges are made of a meterial that

has small pores in it. wW can either get from our doctor or buy in a

chemis(drug store). Mine took quite a while for the whole incision to

be sealed but I did as they said and never got any infection. I

think not getting it wet at all is the main thing, not even cleaning

it with anything, as the scab will not form properly if the area is

continually touched.

I

know my regular MD doesn’t like antibiotic ointments because you can end

up making the germs stronger if you don’t use them correctly. Kind of

like not taking antibiotic pills until they are gone. Keeping things clean and

dry is probably the most important item to address.

This is what I was told also! In fact, I was told not to put skin cream or

lotion on it for 6 weeks because cream is known to weaken the new skin

growth in the gash and cause it to open up.

For my initial hip replacement they didn't clean it at all. The next time

they used hydrogen peroxide . . . and then a damp wash cloth which would be

patted dry and allowed to air dry before anything was put on it. This time

was similar . . . but they gave me a patch that kept the area dry so that i

could take a shower.

My doc said the very same. Nothing but air for the first two weeks,

only a sterile bandage to cover & protect the wound, and even then as

loosely as possible. I had to use plastic wrap and tape to cover the

knee for showering, and was that a bother!

However, since then I've been told to keep it moist with a lotion

containing vit. E or Mederma. In fact, both PT's have encouraged me

not only to apply lotion but to massage it in for at least 10 minutes

morning and evening to, they said, help keep the scar supple which

would encourage minimal scarring. The only problem I've had since were

two little spots that were " upset " and began to have discharge. But

with one days wash w/ peroxide and band-aids applied w/ the triple

antibiotic cream they sell at Wal-Mart, all was good.
