Guest guest
Jan, Here's my experience. They didn't numb my knee. They use a little tool to pop the staples out and it does hurt but more like it stings and tugs. The worst, to me is that each staple (and there are many) has to be taken out one at a time. So as it goes on your leg is stinging more and more. But it probably only took five minutes. Afterwards, be careful with your incision as mine got infected, so put some Neosporin on it and don't let it get too wet for too long. -----Original Message-----From: Joint Replacement [mailto:Joint Replacement ]On Behalf Of JanSent: Tuesday, May 15, 2007 4:30 PMJoint Replacement Subject: Getting staples out on Friday Hi,My TRKR ws 2 weeks ago.I am getting my staples out on Friday. Guest guest
Jan, getting my staples removed didn't hurt at all and only took a couple of minutes or so. The nurse used a tool that kind of grips and relases the staple, then it's gently worked out. It stings a bit, but not painful like the sting of a shot. And my knee felt so much better with them out. She then put on a row of those little steri-strips, or whatever they are called. Those release themselves after a week or two and can be pulled off. I do have a question about the best solution to put on the scar once its all healed and the scabs are gone. Can you puncture a vitamin E tablet and apply directly to the scar? Cocoa butter or shea butter? Vitamin E cream or lotion? I love this group. Thanks for your help. I'm four weeks out from my second total knee replacement surgery. I had my right knee replaced back in August, the 22nd and my left knee done the 17th of April. I'm walking without assistance and suffering only minor discomfort. No pain as long as I take my medicine every 6 hours, just a tight uncomfortable feeling. I frequently use ice packs. The problem I'm having most is no stamana. I tire so easily. Even a shower wears me out and I have to lie down afterwards. I haven't consistently been taking my vitamins though and my taste buds are still a bit off. Is this normal? Will I soon overcome this exhauston? Thanks guys. I love you and wish you well.. Sue Ann
Guest guest
They didnt numb my knee to remove the staples....one or two stung a bit but most of them came out fine....dont worry, if it stings a bit just grit your teeth and they will be out in no time Marilyn (UK) > > Hi, > > My TRKR ws 2 weeks ago. > I am getting my staples out on Friday. > Does it hurt? > Will they numb my knee? > > Jan >
Guest guest
Sounds like you're doing really well Sue Ann. I purchased straight vitamin E oil so I wouldn't have to mess with puncturing the capsules. It's easy, and I've been using it religiously since the steri strips came off. (My RTKR was March 5.) I scar easily. I'm very fair skinned (my parents were both born in Finland). I was worried about how bad my scar would be, but each time I went to PT, and then when I saw the dr. and nurse for my 8 week post op visit, they all commented on how terrific the scar looked, how well it was healing, and how nice and soft it was. PT said that he was going to recommend whatever I was using to other TKR patients, as my scar was healing the nicest he'd ever seen. So, I am a believer in Vitamin E oil. Guest guest
Hi Lynne, Glad to hear you are doing do well. I had my TKR on 12/09/09 and used the walker for around three weeks. I then used a cane for about three months. It is a slow recovery, but eventually you get there. Remember, we are all different, and your age, weight, etc. will affect how your recovery goes. Just keep doing the exercises, go to PT, and all will be well. All the best, Joan ________________________________ From: Lynne <lynanncol@...> Joint Replacement Sent: Wednesday, August 3, 2011 5:20 PM Subject: Getting staples out on Friday  I am so happy to be getting the staples out this Friday. I had my TKR on July 25th. I was having some problems with cramping in my calf but my PT showed me some exercises to help get rid of them. The swelling has gone down a lot and hopefully I will be able to get shoes on as my sil and bil are having a 50th anniversary party on Sunday. I am wondering how long I will be using this walker, any ideas? I wouls love to hear from anyone that has had a TKR. Thanks, Lynne
