Guest guest
I am from kerala, India. Here people were using coconut oil for centuries. All our food contain coconut in some form - coconut oil, coconut meat, coconut water etc.vinegar, Toddy ( a kind of beer brewd from coconut wine) . The caste system was prevalent here. There is a particular caste who climb the coconut trees and pluck coconuts. There is another caste speciallised in Toddy making right from extracting coconut wine. Each part of the coconut tree is useful to man in one way or another. While I was a baby, my mother used to put coconut oil on the whole of my body before giving a bath. Sometimes some herbs are also added to the oil. Now I uderstand that it was nothing but Virgin Coconut Oil. Do you know how to make it? Scrape cocnut meat. In Kerala a special kitchen instrument is used and is called Chirava. It is an oval piece of iron sheet ABOUT 2 INCHES DIAMETRE with sharp teeth around which is fixed to a wooden log. A coconut is broken into two parts and the meat is scraped. Different forms of it are available in the market. If it is not possible take the coconut meet from the shell using a knife. If you are doing this go to step 2. 1 . Scape the meat of coconuts (8 numbers) 2 . Put it in a food blender with 2 tablespoons of water and puree.Sqeeze to get the coconut milk. 3. Put the coconut milk in a pan and heat in low flame. After about 20 minutes you will get oil with a good fragrance. Filter. Now your virgin coconut oil is ready. Coconut oil is a good vegetable oil. some people are allergic to it. Check before you use it. The residue you get after filtering the oil you make is tastey. P.J.ph

Guest guest
Make sure you use low heat no more than 80F otherwise the coconut taste is pretty sharp. > > > I am from kerala, India. Guest guest
Sharp or strong? If it is strong, then I might want to have 2 batches of it made up. Most of the coconut oil I get isn't strong enough to suit me but I guess it is ok for adding to foods. You wouldn't want, say iceberg lettuce to be over powered by a coconutty taste.
