I disagree with the newspaper and TV being involved here. I do agree with

writing a letter to your pastor first and then the main Calvary Chapel in Orange

County California.

Willow's situation with the dwarf-tossing church

Willow-

I would think many reasonable-thinking average-sized people would consider

the dwarf-tossing, even in effigy, as reprehensible in any context, much

less a church activity. Therefore, I would suggest contacting your local

newspapers and even local news TV stations and seeing if any of them want

to run a brief story about this. At the risk of stating the obvious, keep

and make copies of the flyer to give to any news outlet that wants to run

with the story.

I was just curious, why do you disagree with the broader media involvement?

I do not disagree with media involvement. I believe that there are steps to

follow. If someone wrongs you take it to that person, then their boss and then

the next boss and then the media. These steps will keep emotions, feelings, and

ideas from falling into a roller coaster/spiral spin. I personal believe the

matter will be solved if their bosses/people within Calvary Chapel talk to this

individual about his behavior.

I think if you want to educate a larger group of people the media is a

requirement. I mean one by one just ain't gonna cut it since there are

so few LPs vs. average sized people. If you simply educate this one guy

he might change his own attitude but he's not likely to spread the word

and it's possible he might just get a chip on his shoulder and spread

the word on that. Once he understands, if he understands, he's been

ignorant he's not likely to spread the word about that, right? So you

need to use the media very nicely and delicately to influence favorably

the attitudes of many.

Again people are speaking for other LP's. I don't agree with Dwarf Tossing

let me make that clear but, if this LP wants to put he/she in this position it's

up to them. LP's have a right to protest and the Dwarf that is going to be

tossed have a right too make that decision.

That is a good question. Partly because I would like this pastor to learn a

positive lesson in regard to the attitudes of LPs. Partly because I want

this to be a positive experience for my son, i.e., not shoving him out in the

the media because of some narrow mindedness. Partly because this is a

church, and I believe that they can and will communicate a peaceful and

positive outcome to a great many people in our area in the finality of this

situation. If I go off angry, and involve the media before this issue is

resolved, I endanger the reputation of LPs across the nation. When you

represent a large group, or a small group, one has to be careful and

thoughtful and positive in their approach to change. Otherwise one alienates

the majority and the point gets lost.

If on the other hand, we effect a change of attitude in this small church in

a positive way, they have communication with churches across the country and

the seed grows from there.

Hi Willow-

Although I was responding to one of the other listserve people about your

situation with your son, I am very glad you responded. Your comments are

very valid and thoughtful. I would still consider trying for some media

exposure if the church isn't appropriately responsive to the problem,

though.

Best wishes,

Ken
