Guest guest
, How exactly will this be great for LP recovery? what are we recovering from? have you seen any science that would at all relate to therapies that would help people with dwarfism in some way? Guest guest
Without trying to delve too much into the politics/religion debate, I have to weigh in on this as dwarf and a theology/philosophy student. Stem cell research has many, many potentially wonderful applications for people affected by numerous neuro-skeletal disorders, especially for nerve regeneration from spinal cord injuries, brain damage, ALS, and Alzheimer's. Also, it can be used in various cancer treatments, endocrine disorders such as diabetes, and arthritis. Will it " cure " dwarfism? Probably not (that involves a whole other area of genetic manipulation -- which I oppose). But it could fix secondary problems associated with dwarfism. And I'm all for that. This is not about creating a new life (that of an embryo) to sacrifice it to fix someone else. Many millions of embryos yearly are flushed down the drain from fertility clinics. Ethically, doesn't it make more sense to use those wasted cells for something good? (And as Christian, while personally against abortion, I have yet to find any compelling argument to convince me a fetus is human prior to the second trimester. A " potential human, yes. Actual human, no.) 50 years ago, there was a lot of debate about whether scientist should use medical information gleaned from horrific Nazi experimentation on concentration camp prisoners. The consensus (many from camp survivors themselves, like one of my personal heroes, psychiatrist Victor l) was that by using the information, we honor the memories of those poor victims. Do not let their suffering be in vain. I feel the same about stem cell research. Also, whether or not the US embraces stem cell research, other countries will: Europe, China, Russia, India. Doesn't it make more sense to have it done here, where medical ethics are more valued? (I can actually foresee Russia and China sacrificing human fetuses in the name of research.) This is like the sex education, birth control debate. Some conservatives (mostly Christians) feel that teaching kids sexual responsibility encourages immorality. That is flawed logic. Parents influence morality. Sex ed saves kids from the trauma of their indiscretions. But this is an election year. Hyperbole rules, and logic and truth are cast aside. Feel free to flame me off list. Guest guest
Joe you are parsing my e-mails and asking me to respond. Stem cells are showing that they can regrow (limited so far) nerve tissue. Perhaps one day, they will be able to regrow nerves and cords so theres hope people with severed cords can have the chance to have the tissue regrown. Is the fetus just a " thing " the day before the 2nd trimester begins and a human the day of? Actually, Jim, that is a good question. Is a child an adult the day he turns 18? Obviously the line is fuzzy. But, I do know that when I had my tonsils removed last year, they had more biological complexity than a 4 week old group of cells that have been growing from the union of a sperm and egg cell. Is anyone weeping for the loss of my tonsils? Are we going to start protesting and bombing throat clinics now? (A little sarcasm. Forgive me.) What is the definition of a human? Joe's post (albeit long) asks some very valid questions (I'm not sure if I agree with all his conclusions, I have to re-read it). Another way of looking at it, from a religious/moral perspective, is when does the soul become ensconced in a human body? In ancient Israel, it was thought to be when the child drew his first breath. Midwives back then would not slap the baby to get it to cry and breath. They would let it lie there, and if it didn't breath in and died, then God didn't put a soul in it. Native Americans, well into the 19th century, believed that a child didn't become human until it was named, usually sometime after she took her first steps. Now, ironically, thanks to modern science, conservative moralists can view the moment that the sperm and egg unite, and have decided that is human at that point. But truthfully, a few dozen zygote cells are no more human than the individual sperm or egg cell they came from. Being a geek, I'll use this analogy for the when the soul " enters " the body. The interface between soul and body, it would seem obvious, is the brain. Now imagine the human brain is like your computer, and your soul is you, the person using the computer. If the computer is turned off, or broken, you don't use it. Likewise, if the brain is not functioning, why would the soul use it? Brain waves in fetuses are not detected until sometime after the 12 week. It varies from fetus to fetus. Many fetuses spontaneously abort within the first 12-15 weeks of pregnancy. So in my humble opinion, I think it is safe to assume an embryo less than 12 weeks old does not have a soul (and if having a soul is one of the criteria of being human, therefore it is not human). In regards to stem cell research, the argument is moot. Scientist are wanting to use the stem cells from embryos manufactured in fertility clinics that are otherwise flushed away. If the conservatives truly care about the sanctity of embryos, then why are they not protesting fertility clinics instead of planned parenthood offices? Seem a bit hypocritical to me. In fact, if we are going to rally to protect the potential humans that come from embryos, they we ought to also rally to protect the potential humans that come from sperm and egg cells. This means no more monthly period for women. No unproductive ejaculation for men. As Monty Python said: " Every sperm is sacred! " (My apologies to the Catholics of this list). I'd better stop before Rose puts me on moderation. (And before I forget: dwarf, dwarf, dwarf. There, now it's dwarf related.) Bill
Guest guest
Funny analogy, not that I agree with it, but one thing, did the tonsils you had removed, that were soooo many in yer throat stay viable, alive and kicking, wincing in pain, once they were removed, even after some 30 years plus, Bill? Forgive I didn't know yer age, so I made you to be 30 something:P Well, a 'fetus', to me, is a living being that is a lot more than 30 years plus, such as were yer tonsil cells, and they have been known to thrive, kick, and feel pain once they were removed or outside of the host body, or the mother. So, as a Christian, I'm stuck in that dilemna too, as when to consider a fetus a life, a life worth allowing to live. I mean, I do have a stance and prolly to most it's one that's more or perhaps the most conservative out of the lot, even the lot of all Christians combined. Because I take it a step further than what Bill stated, as I do know too that some, even amongst Christians, don't feel it's a life, until it has had it's first breath. My stance, and you can disagree with it and me:), but it is an integral part of how I feel as Christian, and as a human amongst others, and as an lp-or a super human amongst the ap's, haha, In Psalm 139:13-16, the Psalmist writes: " You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - and how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. " luv, grady PS-Now, before anyone writes to me and says, Oh you flamed Bill (or anyone else for that matter), I didn't. I accept him as he is and they too:). However, his tonsil cells did tell me that they were happy to be removed. " Ohhhhh, the odor, the odor, " they said! haha J/K;) > But, I do know that when I had my tonsils removed last year, they had more biological complexity than a 4 week old group of cells that have been growing from the union of a sperm and egg cell. " > This is a wonderful piece of poetry and one of my favorite psalms. Finding Nemo is one of my favorite films and beautifully made. Do I believe that fish can talk? Do I believe that animation is real? No. Do I believe the bible is the literal word of God (like some Ouija board where god directly transcribed his thoughts to paper)? No. The old testament existed for hundreds of years before someone scratched down the oral traditions on papyrus. Then for the next 1500 years, monks and scribes translated from Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek to Latin those words and recopied them hand by hand until the printing press was invented. A LOT of typos worked their way into the script, not to mention outright alterations of the actual story. Modern day newspapers make a ton of mistakes daily. Are we to believe the authors of the bible were less fallible? (And I don't want to hear the " they were inspired by God, " argument. Many so-called " inspired " people have said and done a lot of dumb things in the name of God.) A lot of other things were said in the psalms (and other books) that are just plain, well, goofy. Did you know in the book of Leviticus that dwarfs, hunchbacks, and men with damaged testicles can't serve as priests? And women should cover their heads in public and men should not shave. Huh? Why? I am a Christian, in the tradition of British philosopher and theologian Locke. He believed in a " bottom up " approach to spirituality, not " top down. " Meaning, it is up to the individual to define their relationship with God, and by reason act in good conscience to live up to their faith. It is not the job of the government or institutional church to tell us how to live. Reproductive choices should be left up to the individual conscience of each woman. Adultery, drinking and overeating are sins too. In America, we have the freedom and the right to live in sin. If our faith tells us that it is our duty to chastise sinners, so be it -- we also have the freedom of speech. But leave it at that, don't pass laws against it. >PS-Now, before anyone writes to me and says, Oh you flamed Bill (or anyone else for that matter), I didn't. I accept him as he is and they too:). Guest guest
I do believe that Romney's support of McCain was a big event(in their minds anyway) and it pre-empted the show. CNN Breaking News Social Security recipients will receive a cost of living adjustment of 3.6% starting in January, their first raise in three years. Because inflation has been very low in recent years, beneficiaries have not seen an increase since 2009, when they received a 5.8% boost.
