Guest guest
Bill -- I took a yoga class in college for credit & got completely hooked on it. I'm not quite sure what you mean as far as the mysticism part you mean but I think if you take a class from an fitness-focused place rather than a Hindu-focused place you won't get the religious aspect of it. I was also lucky enough to find a place where they had a teacher who was also a physical therapist so she understood my issues better than Susie Creamcheese Aerobicized Teacher did. I took one Tai Chi class & wasn't thrilled with it. It's far too slow for me but you might like it. See if you can find a place to try a few classes so you can get a feel for the differences. Good luck. Guest guest
Bill- I recently started doing some Pilates exercises (adapting the motions for my own body) and it has really helped with toning and strengthening. I'm currently overweight and trying to increase my aerobic exercise with walking, and my ankles and calves would sometimes get sore on extended walks, but Pilates has helped a lot in just a few sessions. I'm not using any equipment- it's just been all stretching and range of motion exercises, sometimes with a towel or rope. Pilates reminds me of Yoga in that it focuses on breathing, relaxation and toning/stretching. Check your local library for renting exercise videos or books- that's what I did, and it's working for me. Rose is right- a lot of gyms and health clubs are offering Yoga classes, more for the physical fitness aspect without the mind/body/spirit aspect involved in more traditional Yoga. I have not tried Tai Chi, but it's something I want to look into sometime. Guest guest
Bill, There are exercises for people with dwarfism at the Kniest SED Group's website. Please click the exercise and alternative therapy button: http://www.ksginfo.org I highly recommend the PBS 'Sit and be Fit' exercise series for senior citizens: http://www.collagevideo.com/showinstructor.asp? Instructor=+Ann+ I am really into doing water walking these days (walking in water, not on it). There are many stretches you can do in the water, and adaptive exercises you can do with kickboards and noodles, etc. I find I can go longer water walking than swimming.
