I could really get a soapbox here especially because I hate all reality

shows; I think they exploit the worst in humanity. Beyond that, Vern

Troyers actions are a major step backward in the public perception of

LP's.I was not a fan of his before and have written him off entirely

after this, LP are at stage were colored people were 30-40 years ago. We

should be striving to have rolls in the media that deal with our stature

as any other character trait, not as a spectacle for the public to laugh

and point at. I feel much more strongly about these issues lately as I

hold my baby son in my arms (3 weeks old and also LP) without a doubt we

need more role models like Dinklage!

Lest we forget that Verne is not the first lp to appear on The

Surreal Life, or did we suddenly forget that Gray of

Different Strokes and Emmanuel Of Webster appeared before him.

However, perhaps we conveniently forgot them as they did alright in

their performances on the show, not degrading themselves as did

Verne. Or perhaps we've forgotten their appearances on that show

because they're not of the majority race or as popular as Verne? Or

perhaps they are lp's not so much from their skeletal structure such

as Achon, DD, SED and the majority of the rest in LPA, but are LP

from their medical condition. And perhaps we forgot them because

there really wasn't much to complian about their appearances, other

than Emmanuel appearing to be just there looking cute, and I guess

some of us would reject wanting to be seen as cute only. And did

get majorly upset when Vanilla Ice set up him to get upset in the

diner episode, which I guess we wouldn't want those outside of our

world, so to speak, to think we get upset when we're in a diner. lol

But all in all, it is a show, with actors who are doing what? Acting,

roleplaying the roles which they were or are famous for. However,

last but not least, perhaps Verne did what he did not so much as an

act but from his decline into the worse form of self degrqadation,

that being (possibly) Alcoholism? And if that is the reason, that's

even sadder. Which leads me to my last perhaps, perhaps instead of

criticising him and blaming him for ruining our entire image as if

one LP can do that to all of us, maybe those closest to him should

pick him up and say, " Hey bro, we love you sooo much we've decided to

take you to an AA meeting, " because I really believe he's hurtiong

himslef mroe than us, but the sad its always about us we seem focus

on more than anything or anyone esle:(.

luv, grady

PS-Lest we forget this famous and respected LP baritone,

Quasthoff who I posted on here as to the positive attributes of his

character and what he's doing positivey for our image, but do we hear

a word more on him from us?:( No, becuase we love the negative more

than anything else. Or maybe is overlooked also, because his

shortness came from Thaladamine, a drug, and not from some Skeletal

disorder too. I dunno, but we do seem to forget the best of us and

harp forever on the few fools in our crowd, go figure.

I would love to see a section of LPA each issue dedicated to lp's

who have accomplished or done something amazing. I don't think that

everyone jumps on the negativity bandwagon.

I am sure everyone sometime in their life has done something stupid

or embarrasing, I sure have, but it sure as heck wasn't in front of

the camera which makes it different. Whether that was acting or

truly real why would anyone want to portray themselves badly, for

money? Money out weighs self-respect? If that is the case then

that is pretty sad. If Verne has a true acting talent then I would

love to see that talent and I am sure others would as well.

As far as other lp's representing the whole lp population that is

honestly a fine line. Yes we in the end represent ourselves but

maybe one forgets that Lp's are NOT in the mainstream. You don't

flip channels and see LP's doing various things. Again what little

exposure of Lp's there have been, were they positive or negative?

Majority of the population has never met an lp so I'd hope their

exposure would be positive.

It is nice to see how we all see ourselves like everyone else and

average but in society's eyes we are not. Until we are in the

mainstream and there is more education out there about dwarfism, I

think the this topic will always be an issue. I can not wait until

the day when you can flip the channel or go to the movies and see an

LP playing a role that isn't an lp role but an everyday role. How

about seeing an LP anchorperson?

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

here here give the guy some slack. Also yall bitched about him being pissed

about his room being taken by the Amazon. Well if he hadn't been gruff and

non bending she wouldn't have respected him. Yes he was drunk and he pissed

in a corner. Who here has not done something when that stupidly drunk? His

moaning was due to him being so drunk... most people when they are so drunk

they are almost sick Moan. Yes he shouldn't have gotten drunk but by

watching the video all of them were well indulging in Alch... Give him some

time and see what he does (cant wait to see how the " Angry Dwarf " handles

I would like to simply add that I have been a fan of Verne for some

time and he has an illness, a disease if you would. It is alcholism.

He checked himself into rehab about a year ago I believe, and

evidently he is still suffering from this disability. I wish someone

could get through to him that he does not have to drink or put himself

through this pain and torture. He can find other methods of dealing

with his problems and realize that life does not have to resolve to

living in the bottom of a bottle or from one drink to the next. No

one should be judging him based on his actions right now, for he is

truly just a sick person and we are seeing his sickness on TV now

unfortunately. I just pray he gets better.

Thank you,

Ive been following this VT thread with interst. Marty very nearly said what

I have been thinking....Sure, he was a major jackass doing what he did but

it had little to do with his dwarfism. Why not treat it as a stupid move by

some person who just HAPPENS TO BE an LP and demphasize his LP status as the

causative/primary factor? How many AP Hollywood types have pulled similar

stupid moves and we give little consideration they are AP? Vertical prowess is

not synonymous with character.....

My only concern with Verne was from the prospect of alcohol poisoning.

I know when I was younger I kept up with the BP's on my drinking and it

almost killed me.

I also lost a coworker who died by throwing up and suffocating from being

too drunk back in the late 80's.

He was a BP.

If we are going to pass judgement on Verne then lets pass judgement on the

whole house and their drinking habits? I would hate to see us treating our

own differently for acting the same as everybody else. That is

hypocritical.

By the way....don't forget the LP conventions.

me? help verne? are ya nuts?

i'm an RN, with no experience in bad cases of " celebrity head " .

luthien and i both watched it; luthien/lp, whims/ap. both of us thought

pretty much the same thing: this is entertainment? i'd rather be subjected

to reruns of the jerry lewis telethon than to willingly watch " surreal life "

again. luthien feels that the only reason verne was there was to be made a

fool of, and that if it was a black person, or another minority, it wouldnt

have happened.

there was nothing witty, entertaining, or inspiring to make me watch it.

4 thumbs down.
