Guest guest
Funny you should mention this. At times when I get fed up with my desk job I daydream about becoming a truck driver. What does a job driving semi-trucks pay? What are the hours and such? > Just wondering why there isn't any L.P.driving semi-trucks for a > living.I know L.P.'s is more than capable of performing the work.I am > a tall person with an interest and concern for the little people.I am > a Truck Driver Instructor, recently i train a student that has > disablities, and i trained him to drive a semi-truck now he has > completed the course and has a job with a major carrier. There is any > in a D.P.S. book that states you have to be of a certain height to > obtain your cdl.I don't think it would cost,or to be all that hard to > convert the pedals to adjust to your lenght. Also i have a strong > desire to help the L.P. but unsure how.If anybody has info for me on > how to help or has an interest in learning to become an over the road > truck driver you can email me at velcro252000@... Guest guest
There was very quiet semi-retired fellow I worked with about year ago whom I had known for a while but just in passing. One day he happened by my desk and saw a picture of my wife who is an LP. Suddenly he couldn't stop talking to me and every conversation would eventually turn to harmless questions my wife and her size. After a couple weeks of this I think he finally got to his real point. He told me about a truck driver he had worked with, several years ago, who was an LP, and about the huge respect the man had developed with all his co-workers. The fact that he was so small yet held his own in a very physically demanding field amazed this guy and he had to tell me or burst. According to this fellow the man had worked in trucking for many years very effectively. Guest guest
Several years ago, when the list was still on ucsd.edu, there was a member named Benoit who was a truck driver and very well respected in his field. I don't think it is bad pay, depending on if you drive long-haul or local. Some distribution companies pay for training and have nice benefits. It is something I thought about for a time, but I think it would be too much time away from my family. Guest guest
Having traveled around much and eaten in many a truck stop, such as the Unocal's, T/A's or Boron's (are they still around?), and not being shy to talk to truckers sitting next to me, I used to ask them if they were any LP truckers and I always got, " Yes! " But I never got exactly who they were and what their name's were, just that these truckers had bumped them into along the way... somewhere... for sure too. Once, I was even mistaken for an LP trucker who supposedly hauled out of Alabama, but upon further investigation, he wasn't a trucker but an appliance store owner who was familiar with many truckers from their deliveries to him. However, the story got turned around whereas he became the trucker and no longer the store owner. I imagine there a few of us on the road doing long distance, but I do know this from truckers, it's not as glamorous a lifestyle as you might think it is. With the FCC laws on keeping log books, making sure you're not overweight, and how many hours you can drive now non- stop before you rest, which is 10 hours now, I think. Plus, the road use taxes you pay if you're an independent or your company pays for you if you're not, only eats more and more from what you actually take home. The most interesting stories I would get from truckers were the ones when they had taken their wives or gf's around with them. I guess they came along to make sure their hubbies or bf's were not bitten by any lot lizards, because any trucker will tell ya that some of those lot lizards can be quite deadly. ~grady
