Kathy,

dont believe everything you read!!

seriously, they are far behind on everything. The registration packages

have not been mailed out. I heard that the cost is $125US but I'm not sure

if its accurate.

as far as presenters go, there is a list on the site which is pretty

vague. I know that Kathy h. and I are presenting our workshop on Friday

night (good thing there is a time change or Kathy would fall asleep!).

I'll post as soon as I hear anything concrete.

take care, wendy, in canada

Dana,

Same here...Do you know if there is a set fee for the whole conference or do

you have to pay for specific days and lectures? I've never been to one of

these before and I'm going on my own so I'm a little nervous. I don't want

to get there and then find out I can't even attend the conference! Help!!

Any information would be very much appreciated and would greatly decrease my

already high anxiety levels about going.

Hi Kathy,

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am determined to go even if my

son doesn't. I will not give up trying to get him to change his mind. I

don't know why he is so resistant. I'm thinking maybe it's because he thinks

it is cutting into his summer " free time " or now that he is so much better

OCD wise, it seems as though he doesn't want to linger on the subject....is

it denial or is this normal?? I can't figure it out yet. His doctor, Lee

Fitzgibbons, has encouraged him to go because she will be there and will be

running a children/teens group and she thought he would be inspirational to

some of the children because of how much progress he has made and how his

life has changed. Maybe that's it...I don't know at this point. I'm just

trying to get him through the end of the school year right now and out of his

freshman year. We had our CSE meeting last Friday and it lasted 3 hours but

we came out getting what we asked for. The two things that helped most were

a great book titled slaw and meeting with an advocate before the CSE to

make sure I was within my rights legally to ask for the supports my son

needed.

That's one hurdle down, one to go and then I can start planning for the

conference in August. I'm looking forward to meeting you there too.

HI:

There is typically a set fee for the entire conference.

I know I felt anxious when I went to my first OCF conference, mostly about

how Steve would handle the trip as he was so very sick then. ly it

was a measure of my desperation to find treatment for him that I was flying

him thousands of miles even though air travel triggered his OCD very badly.

It was incredibly freeing for him to meet so many other OCDers and I felt a

wash of tremendous relief at the first session I attended with Steve. Just

sitting there with hundreds of people with OCD around us felt cathartic as

I had promised him I would find another person with OCD for him to meet so

he didn't have to feel so odd. He also got to see Mark McGwire hit a home

run. The hotel bedding was mega-contaminated but he really enjoyed meeting

other kids with OCD. I also was able to observe some knowledgeable docs

treating contamination OCD in the women's bathroom and got some very good

CBT tips.

Noelle, I am looking forward to meeting you in Schaumburg. Just let me

know what else is worrying you and I will try not to be too reassuring.

Good luck, happy travels, aloha, Kathy (H)

HI Noelle:

What you describe about not being interested in doing things related to OCD

is very familiar to me. Perhaps by focusing on the fun to be had, e.g.

swimming in the hotel pool, socializing, playing tourist, or whateve your

son likes to do might change his focus. It is very hard for them to think

of standing out in public about their OCD. However I do think it is a very

powerful experience.

Sometimes when I want Steve to reflect on something and reconsider I have

to back off completely and act as if I don't have any feelings one way or

another. Please tell your son there will be other kids there that he can

hang with. Also there are lots of fun things to do in Chicago. We always

combine conferences with visit to Science centers and museums, things which

are few and far between in our rural backwater. I am sure you have lots of

ideas of making the trip seem like a fun prospect without dwelling on OCD

issues.

Good job on the CSE meeting. Soon you will know more than the school

administrators and can be a resource for them at these meetings :-))

Take care, aloha, kathy (H)

When my daughter's symptoms are low she wants nothing to do with anything

related to OCD--doctor's visits, talking about it, CBT, etc. It seems she

just wants to " forget " about OCD and take advantage of the respite.

My daughter tells me OCD " wants her to be confusing " or that it " wants her

to frustrate and upset people. " When I make it plain that something is

important to me, I often end up triggering this part of her OCD. Usually,

the more I care about something the less I act as if it matters. I don't

know how common compulsions to frustrate or confuse are (I haven't noticed

others describing them) but these have been with Kel since her OCD onset.

BTW, E & RP suggestions for these would be very welcome! These are the

symptoms that probably cause her the most trouble in school--which is over

as of yesterday YEAH!

Hi Kathy:

You are making a very important point. We need to ensure our kids realize

that to us they are way, way, way more than their OCD dx. I know my

obsession to know about how to cope with OCD does annoy Steve a bit,

although he is pleased and sometimes relieved that I have learned enough to

help him navigate with docs and be his case manager. One way we can

connect together well is to talk about Science which is a love of both of

ours and since he is doing a lot of dissection at school right now, it is

related to OCD but not discussed in that context.

One thing that has been working well that I got from another parent on the

list - sorry I have forgotten who, please remind me - is to just say " Hello

OCD " . It is done with humor and surprise and seems to work reasonably well

with many varieties of OCD symptoms. Steve also says " Hello OC " to me when

he thinks I am going over the top about things. The rest of the family has

followed suit and we are often in stitches about it. It really does help

OCD be a separate thing in our lives. Perhaps you can use this for the

frustrating and confusing rituals, that way you can develop the same

reputation I have in my family of having a terribly poor sense of humor :-))

Take care, aloha, Kathy (H)

,

At this point, it would be better to register on-site at the Boston

Conference, rather than risking that your registration gets through

the mail to Texas, then processed and back to Boston before the

conference begins.
