Guest guest
Hi all, Okay so I saw the site that you posted Jayme. Sure I get offended about people saying the " M " word. I agree with you but I also feel that if nobody knows any other word but " M " its not their fault that aren't technically up-to-date with correct terms for us.... secondly, I see so many people getting ticked off because " we " as little people don't get respect like we should. I totally agree on that, because of what some people have done it ruins our chances to do more important things in life.... but I'm at the point where i feel that " we " need to move on past these little comments that are made. So someone cracked a joke at " M's " .... move on. I'm not going to get ticked off at every single person that cracks fun at who we are. I don't have time to be angry. I have other important stuff to think about. I'm sorry again that you got offended Jayme but there are to many other things at least for me to be worried about than comments like such. And besides, I don't see many of us getting offended and saying anything when people talk about over weight people or mentally handicap people. It's just my opinion. I don't mean to offend anyone at all so please don't think that's my intention, its just how i feel. Guest guest
Many months ago, we went to see Larry the Cable Guy live (in fact it was a couple of years ago...) There was a group of us, including my husband, my son (both AH) and our dear friend " Big Joe " . Big Joe stands 7 feet tall. During the show, there were several " M " word jokes. Did we get up and stomp out, no. Larry the Cable Guy is a comic/actor who is playing a role. LTCG is a character, the character is supposed to be an ignorant, sexist, redneck. As such, he uses very non-PC words (believe me, the people who brought little kids to the show were doing lots of hand-over-the-ears and were taking the kids out). The " M " word was mild compared to some of the new words those kids learned that evening... After the show, LTCG is out front at a table signing autographs. So, Big Joe and I get in line together. When we get to the front of the line, Big Joe introduces me to LTCG " I'd like you to meet my wife " . Let me tell you, mr Cable Guy's jaw dropped, he even dropped character and said in a normal voice without the accent " glad to meet you " and stuttered something about love. Anyway, LTCG character will not last forever, and maybe the comic who brought him to us will bring us something else to make us laugh. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
No I dont like the word.....but I also realize there are people out there that, that was the word they were taught to use. So instead of getting so angry and upset....be polite and explain to them if you are able to do so what the appropriate word is. It shows them that we are out to educate instead of picking fights every chance we get.
Guest guest
im not saying people have to stomp out or stop listening to him, because yes, he is very funny, i just find the word offensive and no one should use it, no matter if its a character or not..ive heard it so many times and so many people use it, its just sick to me..just like the n word, i hate it with a passion too..reason i hate it, is because its seperating us from everyone else when we are all human and shouldnt be seperated from that..to me no matter what, the word shouldnt be used, i dont care he is a celebrity and its a " character " character smaracter, lol..he still should not use the word at all, why?we are not a joke!alot of people make jokes, fine, but they dont have to use us as jokes...just my 2 cents jayme K McClintock <kage_ar@...> wrote: Many months ago, we went to see Larry the Cable Guy live (in fact it was a couple of years ago...) Guest guest
I agree with Jayme. Sometimes there is a time to say ENOUGH! The more we educate people the less reason they have to use ignorance as an excuse. Unless someone has been living in a cave there is no reason to use the M word. It went out a long time ago. That is why I wrote that article on Bravo's show. These are supposed to be the " elite " women of the county. Yet, they find it funny to poke fun at people who are not like them. As for the overweight and mental jokes, I don't like those either. It is a guarantee that someone in the audience will be offended. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi , Extending your theory: One could also say that a woman or man who appears fully nude and engaging in an ...ummm... an adult situation or worse is " just an actor who is supposed to act as you said, sexist, ignorant, and like an uneducated redneck. " which may be true on some level but not on MY level! Does that mean you believe that we should stoop to the level that society has deemed acceptable (or not) or do we need to stand for something we believe is morally correct? Where do we draw the line FOR OURSELVES and what makes us so incensed that we stand up and walk out (telling a theater manager the reason) or be heard by writing letters and making phone calls? I do not have all the answers. Heaven knows I do not even know all the questions and I am NOT attacking you or anyone else... Just thinking out and putting those thoughts on " cyber " paper! Cheers, Karolyn Re: some comments made by larry the cable guy and All, I agree that sometimes we jump to fast to start accusing people of using the M word inappropriately. Guest guest
I can understand why it might upset you, but I personally found it funny, I understand the " m " word easily upsets people but I just believe that people have better things to do then get upset every time a comedian uses the word. Mencia uses it all the time, but he also uses the " N " word and Beener very excessivly. If a person of respect was to use it, especially an elected offical I can see being a little upset, but comedians will always use it to try to get a laugh. Do I think it's right? No...I don't think it is....I've just come to accept it because of what they are trying to do. I don't think you should start disliking Larry just because of him using the word. It's just not worth it if he makes you laugh all of the other time. We need to laugh alot more in the world and not be so angered, but that is just my humble opinion. Guest guest
I read 'Comedians' as 'Canadians' and was GOING to write back with 'What are you talking about, eh?!' But seriously. Not all black skinned people take offense from 'Nigger', either. Just like not all fat people take offense at being called fat. Chances are if someone were directing the word Midget at you and you indicated that it was offensive to you, they'd probably stop...But 'all in good fun' comes to mind. Guest guest
As one who has done occasional standup and written editorials about the innappropriate use of the " M " word, I guess I'll weigh in (for what it's worth). I think, as far as comedians go, whether or when we should get upset depends on the context. Obviously, in a nightclub, or on stage in some high-price venue, I don't necessarily like the use of the M word, but I'm not going to spend my time or energy fighting it. It is directed to a limited audience, and I think most of the people attending expect a certain amount of debase, crude or politcally incorrect material. (You don't go to a strip club for the steak and wine -- not that I WOULD EVEN KNOW what the inside of strip club looks like, much less ever go inside one ;-p ). However, when that kind of humor is broadcast on national TV, with a much wider audience, and has the greater potential to negatively affect public opnion, then I do get riled up (hence my editorial about Jimmy Kimmel). Also, I think many comedians purposely push the envelope, not only to get attention, but to remove sancrosanct status from certain words and terms. I think people can be too hyper-sensitive, and some comedians feel it is there philosophic duty to bring us back down to earth. Ufortunately, they don't apply this evenly and to every marginalized group. It seems like dwarfs, the obese, and homosexuals are the only ones whom it is appropriate to mock. So we pick out battles carefully. Conserve ammunition. Guest guest
Different things upset different people... I have a special needs child who is autistic... I get very offended when people start throwing the word " retard " out there and I get even more upset when people are making fun of handicapped people... But there are times where a joke was said, or a remark was done and I didnt get AS offended as I normally would have... If a stranger starts going off talking about a retard or making fun of the " short bus " then I immediately want to hurt him, but if it is someone I know and they make a passing remark, I normally dont take offense.... I is the way they say it and why they say it... Everyone has their own tolerance for what they can/can not handle and what they will/will not take... I know that I have laughed at Larry's jokes, even the ones that he talks about retards... Did I think I would laugh, no, but did I? Yes... Am I ashamed of laughing, no...when you are watching comedy, you are expected to laugh... if he was out on the street making remarks, then yeah, I would get into a debate with him, but he is doing his routine and he is trying to get a rise out of people... that's his job... There are always 2 sides to everything and not everything out there will offened everyone the same... I can honestly say that as I got older, my views have changed alot... At first, any kind of comment made towards my son or any mentally handicapped child would get me pissed off and ready to fight, now a days, I think about why things were said, if they said it to hurt someone, or if it was said out of pure ignorance and not to be taken as a bad thing... I dont get myself all upset anymore and I take the time to educate others if something is offending me... I let them know why I am offended and 9 times out of 10, that person is sorry for whatever was said and they rethink about things before they casually make a remark...
