Hi ,

Actually the HA is in the un-implanted ear. ly, I'm not sure my

audiologist knows what he's doing but he's new so I'm giving him the benefit

of the doubt for now.

Sam

Hi ,

Thanks for the suggestion. Just got home from San Francisco. Didn't get a

chance to see " White Christmas " as we were booked visiting friends the whole

time. Although we loved San Francisco while we lived there, don't think we

ll move back now.

Regards,

Sam

Hi Sam!

These are the kind of observations to take to your next mapping to help

your audie map you better.

Good luck to you!

this is the key, for the pre-lingual deafs. Like Joni said, it take a long

time, sometime years before we can discriminate 100%. I was born with

profound loss, it has been one year since I was implanted, not yet one year

since

activation (dec 12, jan 8), I can tell you that my discrimination of speech is

at about 50%,,, what more can I ask for?

Try the 3G, you might like it!

Hi Joni,

Actually, I lost my hearing at three years of age so does that make me pre-

or post-lingually deaf? Furthermore, I was hoping that the fact that I can

understand some speech with my HA that I would pick up faster with the CI.

My expectations were different than what I'm actually experiencing. I

honestly believed that my expectations were realistic. I know that it

varies from person to person. My ENT told me that it takes an average of

six months to really benefit from the CI. So I'm giving it six months. I

can hear environment sounds. While that is nice, it's not a high priority

for me. My ultimate goal is to understand speech.

Lee,

I may try the 3G next time. Just so you understand, I don't expect to have

perfect hearing. I just expected to have better hearing. I'm hearing more

sounds than before, just not where I was hoping. I've read and heard of

people giving up their HA a month or so after being hooked up. Since I rely

on my HA to use the phone and communicate with people I can't understand

with the CI, I'm nowhere near there. Perhaps someday down the road.

Sam

Hi Joni,

Yes, I can still use the phone with my HA. I'm having more difficulty now.

It's too early for me to try the phone with the CI.

To be honest with you, I tried to keep my expectations low. I actually

believed that my expectations were realistic.

Just so you all understand, I don't regret getting a CI. I'm hearing more

sounds than I've heard before. I just expected speech discrimination to be

better than it has been. I love my ENT and I would choose him again if I

decide to go bilateral. It's my audiologist that I'm not too thrilled with.

As I mentioned earlier, will give him another chance and see how it goes.

He's new at this so I've been giving him the benefit of the doubt.

BTW, I got a lot of volunteers at work willing to read to me. I decided on

four (two women and two men). Two of them read to me on Mondays, Wednesdays

and Fridays. The other two on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The women do it in

the mornings and the men do it in the afternoons. I'm starting to make out

some of the sounds but they don't sound natural yet. Still soft and either

slightly raspy or flat. I noticed that if I turn the sensitivity up then it

sounds more raspy, probably due to more high pitched sounds. If I turn the

sensitivity down then it sounds more flat, probably due to less high pitched

sounds.

Sam

Hi ,

I got the impression from the audiologist that it was a waste of time to

program the BTE when he didn't want to program it the first time I brought

it. He said it would be three months before he would program it. However,

it will be almost two months when I see him the next time.

BTW, I checked with my insurance carrier, there's no limit to the number of

mappings covered by them. I just have to continue to pay the co-payments.

Sam

Sam,

If I am not mistaken, low frequency sounds travel farther while the high

ones travel less. That would explain what you experience with the sens

setting. The trick to the sens is finding that ideal spot where you receive

the desired sound while reducing the rest.

I'm sure you WILL have better speech discrimination. Give it another 5

months before you judge it.

Hello Sam,

I'm having a hard time understanding your audiologist's point of view

in insisting on using only the BWP. We're both in the same city but

I have a different audiologist that has mapped me from Day 1 using

the BTE, 3G. I remember from one of your posts that you had

considered getting a different audie and may I suggest that you

contact the Atlanta Ear Clinic. There are two really experienced

audiologists with that implant clinic (Nucleus 24C, 3G). If you're

interested, I can send you a post with their names and phone numbers.

I'm slowly beginning to understand speech around me; I'm not always

conscious that I " heard " what was said, but realize that I'm

understanding much, much more than I ever did with hearing aids.

Hi Gayle,

I'm giving my audiologist another chance so when I do decide to change, I'll

be in touch with you.

I'm picking up some words but not as much as I can with the HA. So you can

see I'm a bit frustrated but I'm trying very hard to be patient.

BTW, I showed up for my appointment today only to find out it was cancelled.

He called in sick. They tried to call me but I already left. Wasted my

time.

Hi, Sam,

I'm sorry you are having frustrations with your CI and your audiologist.

I think we may have corresponded about this before, but if not, please know

I went through the very same thing. I changed when my audi insisted I was

doing well despite no voice distinction at all. When I asked for a company rep

to join us, she refused and Choclear refused to send one because the audi had

not invited her! I changed audi's and he is wonderful. It still took more

aggression, on my part, (and another year's time) however, to really get to the

bottom of things. I asked (as advised by members of this forum, G-d bless them

all!) for an integrity test (non invasive, easily done in audi office) AND I

made an appointment with a new surgeon. He ordered x-rays of my implant and

upon seeing them, and reading the integrity test, recommended re-implantation.

(The first five electrodes turned out to be so deeply buried inside that high

frequency sounds could not get through, thereby limiting all of that speech

discrimination.) This was done in Jan, 2005, turn-on was Feb.,2005, and today I

am getting speech discrimination. I am still deaf, and it will never be

perfect hearing, but Sam? It is so much better that I am now persuing an

implant

for my other ear. My original implant was in Oct. 2002, and I NEVER would

have considered another implant based on the original results. As you said,

environmental sounds are wonderful, but I wanted to understand people talking!

So, I hope you get some good referrals in your area (Im in PA and went to NY for

my re-implant) for a new audi, but please consider, also, asking for a second

opinion by a different surgeon. It made all the difference for me. if

nothing else, it can rule out that improper placement is the problem. Feel free

to

e-mail again through this forum or privately. Good luck and keep us posted!

I was asked by several members what made me want to join this group.

I am not a LP and I suppose several members thought I did not belong

here or that I could not possibly understand your issues. I was even

taken to task by a few. The answer in my heart was always Sam, then I

was called out because I have been out of contact with Sam's aunt (my

friend) for quite some time. Well, I have corrected that thanks to

all of you. I will hopefully get a good report of how Sam is doing

and maybe my friend and I can reconnect as well. I would like to

know if Sam is actively involved in LPA and if not maybe we can

encourage involvement from him -- he is a big kid now.

So thanks for taking me to task and helping me reconnect with some of

my friends from the past. I would still like to help LPA, but LPA has

also helped me.

Thanks,

Nadia

Hi Sam

Jeanine and I are both having problems with our Microsoft Internet

Browsers. We are both using Windows XP. When you type in a website addy

it just sits there with the hour glass and doesn't do anything. So

somebody suggested downloading Mozilla. As far as using " messengers " I

have NEVER used any instant messenger. My daughter uses AOL's " AIM " but

I'm not concerned whether she's been having any problems with that

recently.

M.

RE: Re: Gabby

Well... You can't actually use your messengers through it... But you can

use all of your messengers at once through trillian. (I have issues with

and trillian though - they don't play well)

As far a mozilla... What was the beginning of this conversation??

The only time I use internet explorer at this point is when I need to

access the " exchange server " for work... I use mozilla firefox exclusively

otherwise. The only time I ever have a problem with it is when I mistakenly

click on a link to send an email from the site I'm at (just did it a minute

ago, which is why it's a thought at this moment)... When I do that it opens

like 45 explorer windows... Lmao (apparently firefox does not play well with

outlook)... But all in all.. I would say it's about 95% problem free...

Just my 2 cents

Sam
