Guest guest
To be very honest, I may have a roof over my head as I type these words, but I am always just one footstep away from the streets myself, and I am NOT sharing this just so people here will feel sorry for me either! I don't even like sharing this here, but perhaps some need to be aware for what it is worth, who knows? Because this CAN happen to each one of you too. I have been on my own since seventeen. By nineteen, I began having one spine surgery after another, followed by nearly thirty other orthopaedic surgeries, chronic anemia, a severe spinal cord disease, and recently now, cancer. Somehow, I still managed to complete my education inbetween all that, and managed to work too. However, when one is forced to be off of work for months at a time, with no income, things get quite tough. You all would NOT believe the roach infested terrible places I have called " home. " As long as I could work inbetween surgeries and diseases, all was well. In recent years I have had no choice but to go on disability. My body just would no longer allow me to keep that up, so I had to. Guess what? All the thirty plus years I DID manage to work, puts me over THE GOVERNMENTS cut off point, so I can not get a medical card. The whopping $600.00 a month I have to live on, is " too much " income to qualify for a medical card. And I am on VERY EXPENSIVE medications! For the SAME reason, I cannot receive any Food Stamps either! So out of $600.00 a month, must come rent, and the whole nine yards, and luxeries such as laundry detergent are sometimes very hard to get each month. I desperately need dental care, but obviously cannot afford it. There ARE programs for dental care, but for unwed mothers only. Nothing for dwarves forced to live on disability, who ACTUALLY WORKED for many years. Like I said, I NEVER know from one month to the next what my future holds. LP's in poverty??? You're darn right there are. And some like myself, who simply and very sadly, fall through all the cracks of finding help out there too. As in state and federal help, that is. There is precious little help out there for decent hardworking LP's whose ONLY reason for not being able to continue working, are due to MAJOR health battles that cannot be helped. Guest guest
I am shocked when I read things like this because I am always able to get assistance for my family when I need to. I have had to get food stamps, medicaid, energy assistance (and for me that year it was a 4,000.00 furnace FOR FREE as well as new energy efficient bulbs that will last 8 years FOR FREE). Next winter we qualify to apply for weatherization which includes FREE replacement windows and insulation. Between my husband and I, we frequently find we make more than what officially qualifies as the 'poverty level' for a family of 8. Yet usually we DO qualify for help because face it, for a family with 6 kids who are only a squeak over the poverty level, we struggle and pray week to week and month to month. Only RARELY do I find myself asking for help because I know that as long as we are able to hold on a little longer we'll be OK. Mainly I stay away from asking for help because there are others who DESPERATELY need and DESERVE it. I have NEVER had an agency tell me that WE ONCE EARNED too much over the years and so never will we qualify. I can't understand how this can happen to anyone. What matters is HOW MUCH IS IN THE BANK??? Maybe it is because I am in Rhode Island and before that MA, with a brief stint in CT and a brief stint in OH. I never did apply for help in CT or OH. The ONLY trouble I ever had was getting home health care and PT. NEVER, NEVER has ANY of my family been turned down for Medicaid, Rite Care or any other health plan offered by the state. Further, those health plans while totally inadequate for 's Orthopedic needs (because it won't pay to go to MD) they DO cover basics for ALL OF US. Yes, even me and . We get dental that is virtually free and vision also virtually free. Prescriptions cost a little and Dr Visits have NO co-pay. Of course we have restrictions like, RI Dr's only but it has proven to be a life saver in between jobs. I am in fact sending an application out tomorrow afternoon for family coverage. Just waiting for my direct deposit stub. Pete's out of work since December and his extended family plan just ran out. RI WILL give us the health coverage until he finds another job. My employer offers health insurance, but it costs too much so RI will work with my employer to pay for MOST of the weekly fee and we'll have to pay some. OR they will give us the very very basic and inexpensive rite-care. I think alot of people seem to get seriously screwed and I don't understand it. Something needs to be done about this problem. I am so sorry to know that people are out there in such predicaments. Doesn't your state offer full health, dental and vision on SSI? has always had 100% coverage through medicaid (because of her disability she has a WAIVER which means she can have access to other benefits that RI medicaid recipients don't get) and she is ALWAYS COVERED when we have additional insurance as well. Instead of Medicaid being her primary, it becomes her secondary until we no longer have insurance and it then becomes her primary insurance again. As long as SHE is seen in RI, SHE NEVER has a CO-PAY because medicaid will pay 100% or the co-pay if we have an HMO. What state do you live in? Guest guest
A couple of links for cost-saving ideas: www.angelfoodministries.org This is a way to feed - on average a family of 4 for a week or a single person for a month - for $25. All of the information is at the web site. Also, participate in your local Freecycle, it is a way communities come together to share. What I don't need or want anymore may be just what you are looking for - nothing is sold or bartered, people just give away things. you can find your local group at: www.freecycle.org __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I do appreciate your suggestion, however, I live in the same city as the University Of Kentucky, with a huge dental school. About ten years ago they began charging fees. Just to be seen costs $82.50! I even wrote a letter to the Dean of the Dental School, briefly explaining my situation, and my desperation, and she never even replied. Sometimes life can be discouraging by having to constantly run into closed doors and a very uncaring, unfair system. I do hope I didn't come across as " pity me, pity me, " in what I shared regarding the poverty topic this afternoon, as that was not my intention. I did however hope to On the spur of the moment In a message dated 4/6/06 4:11:19 P.M.
