Guest guest
Jersey, The idea of strap on pedal extensions doesn't sound very safe. Perhaps you should contact Casey Hubelbank, LPA district one director, who is a professional driving instructor. Also, my folks live about an hour east of Portland, I can talk to them and see if they have my old pedal extensions. My dad, who is an engineer, built them for me when I first got a car. Guest guest
If you are employed or seeking employment, you could get financial assistance through Vocational Rehabilitation to help pay for your car modifications. Pedal extenions through a proper vendor is safer than strapping something onto your shoes. There aren't too many resources that will get you the funding or pedals with in a day or two. But it would be worth going through the process to get what you need and to keep yourself (and everyone else on the road) safer behind the wheel. If you are unemployed, I would encourage you to contact your local Independent Living center for possible funding resources for driving evaluation and modifications. Let me know you you would like the resouces. If you do, please tell me what state you live in. ~ a > > I now have a car, my first car and I'm getting my license in a few weeks, maybe less. Then, I could unstrap them and put them away when I am done driving and they would be portable, so I could drive other cars without having to dis-assemble and re-assemble the pedal extensions, which I did some research on and all of them say that it can wear the pedal extensions down if they are repeatedly taken off and put on. > > I have some ideas for the foot extensions, but I am totally open to suggestions, advice, whatever. I just want to pay as little as possible, since I already have to pay for my license, insurance and minor repairs on the car this month, not to mention other bills and still have money for gas. > > > Jersey > Portland, OR > > >
Guest guest
I have heard of people attaching wooden blocks to the pedals (not to their shoes) for a short-term solution, but I also advise extreme caution. When one needs to brake suddenly, one really wants to know the extension is reliable. I once had a brake extension come loose as I started to merge onto a freeway. I managed to ease back off onto the shoulder and slide down and hit the brake. It scared the daylights out of me. Since then, when I have my car in for regular maintenance, I ask the people to make sure the extensions are still attached securely. Guest guest
Putting blocks on the pedals is NOT a good idea. The weight of the blocks will press down on the pedals when not in use. Also they can slide off just as easily and you would not be able to access the pedals when you need to. I strongly advise people to NOT take short cuts when it comes to getting good reliable modifications for their cars! Short cuts will not only hurt the driver, but everyone else on the road! ~ a > > I have heard of people attaching wooden blocks to the pedals (not to their shoes) for a short-term solution, but I also advise extreme caution. Guest guest
Hi Jersey, The $200 you spend on pedal extenders is well worth the while. The two main producers of pedal extenders have been used by thousands of dwarfs and have constantly been engineered and improved upon to what they currently are. Personally, I almost spend $200 on gas each week with the driving I do, but an average tank of gas now a days is costing $40-$60. I know many people are having difficulty with purchasing a vehicle and insurance, but when you consider how much everything cost including maintenance, vehicle, insurance, registration, and on and on, pedal extenders should be the least of your problems. I know I'm harsh, but I want you to have the safest vehicle modifications available. a suggested some funding routes. I would look into those. I put pedal extenders on and off at least once, sometimes twice a day. My main set I use is almost ten years old. I have a lot of newer ones as well, but my old ones have really held up. Look at both Chuck Secor's and Komo's pedals. Those are the two most popular sets of extensions that I've been talking about. Look at it this way. $200 stands between you and your independence. I'm always available by e-mail or phone if you have any other questions related to driving or vehicle modifications. -Casey Hubelbank --- Bill Bradford <tslug1@...> wrote: > Jersey, > The idea of strap on pedal extensions doesn't sound > very safe. Guest guest
Casey, I have to agree that the cost of good pedals is well worth it! We got “travel pedals” for luthien to use, and The Ability Center in Toledo helped us with the cost. They were well worth it for her to be safe while driving and they will transfer to any car she drives, including rentals if need be. The ones we got were Komo’s and go on and off easily, but tighten securely with the included tools. They are metal with rubber foot platforms, and have lasted for years now, and will have years of life in them. Guest guest
HI Group! I used a wooden (light) block for years like since I was in High School. Yea it might have not been the most safest thing to do but I didn't want extensions because I felt like I was not as short as other LP's and I was in denial for years and years too but that's another topic. So, although not as safe and you do need to know something about something its better than attaching something to your shoes!!! C'mon! Do you want to keep this car and license and your life? SO be smart it might take a bit longer but don't be silly with it. I'm glad you asked the " group " because now you have all kinds of suggestions to consider but please don't do the shoe thing. Okay? Isn't there something thru LPA or any other organization that can give this lad a hand? I'm sure. There is my 5 cents ( inflation) ya know! ha ha Kindly, Eileen --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. Try the free Beta.
