Guest guest
I agree, NY would be a great location. I havent been to a conference in years but i'm ready to go again. Even if NY is more expensive i think it would be worth it. > > > > Anyone hear if D2 is following through on NY City? > > > > It was announced at the Lancaster PA Regional that they were looking > > in to it but we never heard a thing since > > > > > > -- > > > > > > > > > > === > >
Guest guest
Hi Bill, NYC would be great, but room price, parking and the cost of a simple meal can be scary. The cost of a New York hamburger can fill up the tank on a sedan, at least half-way. But, what we refer to as 'dirty water hotdogs' can be reasonable (and an adventure!) When I was bored sometime in the late summer I did some comparison of Hiltons and the information (un-negotiated prices of course) for the same time this summer is listed below this thread. I did some 'close to NYC' selections and 'in' the city ones also. As you can see, NO ONE should plan to drive into NYC, unless their car folds up and can ride up to their room in the luggage cart. Seems there is no 'self-parking' and it would be cheaper to hire someone to sleep in your car in another state, than to park in their lots. Another hitch might be that D1 was said to be putting in a proposal to host it again the year before D2 said they'd propose. I can't see that being a successful idea. Also not fair to the membership west of all of us. > Anyone hear if D2 is following through on NY City? Guest guest
I am actually surprised that their hasn't been a regional or even a national held in NYC before?!? It's the BIG APPLE!! The 'capital of the world' for crying out loud!! Their are so many things to do here. So many restaurants, so many clubs, so many places to just hang out like central park or Times Square. Maybe the teens and 20s crowd can get to go to a live taping of TRL on MTV. Their are the museums like the museum of natural history, the Hayden Planetarium (an architectural gem), MOMA, the Guggenheim (another architectural gem), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more. You can come down to the Bronx and go to a Yankees game, the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. And no the Bronx aint that scary, lol. Dont worry, I got your back! Oh, and if it were held during the July 4th weekend as nationals seem to be, you get to see the big Macy's fireworks display. And hey if you don't see it, you'll definitely hear it. Speaking of Macy's what about all the shopping? Macy's, Bloomies, saks, okay maybe getting above some of our price ranges but you get the drift. Can't miss out on buildings like the empire state building with the newly renovated observatory. You know, I could go on and on and on about the places to go and things to see in NYC. I think every taste could be satisfied. As for transportation well thats another story. The subway aint really lp friendly. yeah, nyc has its drawbacks but i would love to see at least a regional held in the city. Just my thoughts. Guest guest
Uh...while I do support a conference in NYC, it's a little presumptious to call it the " capital of the world. " I think the people in L.A., London, Paris, Mexico City, Beijing, Tokyo, Rome, Cairo, Moscow, Berlin, Athens, Bombay, Rio, Toronto, Hong Kong, etc. would beg to differ. -Bill On 3/20/06, Rich <gr8t4tune@...> wrote: > > I am actually surprised that their hasn't been a regional or even a > national held in NYC before?!? Guest guest
Rich, In October 2001 there was a regional in Staten Island (one of the 5 boroughs of NYC). Considering the tragedy that happened only a month earlier, it was well attended with about 200 people in attendance. As for having one in NYC again....I think that would be awesome! I love the Big Apple. Barbara Re: NY Conference? I am actually surprised that their hasn't been a regional or even a national held in NYC before?!? It's the BIG APPLE!! Guest guest
Dude, those are nice little cities but i wouldn't give them the title of capital of the world. I stand by my word as NYC is THE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. Capital being the operative word here. The money center of the world is 'wall street'. The United Nations is headquartered here as well. It's like when we say the US president is the 'leader of the free world'. Yeah, sorry to those who may be offended at my phrasing but like I said I stand by my word. Guest guest
Typical New Yorker, living in his own little world. ;-) Not to be too nit-picky (well, yes I guess I am), you're facts are wrong on a few counts: Zurich is actually the " money center " of the world. Athens was the birthplace of Democracy (the origin of the " free world " ), plus I think the rest of the " free world " gets upset when we say our president is their leader. India is the largest democracy in the world, and home to one of the world's oldest cities (Bombay). Mexico City currently has twice as many people as NYC. Beijing and Rome had over 1 million citizens prior to the birth of Christ. Plus Rome was truly the capital of the world in Ancient times, with an empire that stretched from Great Britain to India. Plus Rome (the Vatican) is the seat of the largest unified religious denomination in the world (The Roman Catholic Church -- " catholic " is Latin for universal, BTW). In the 18th century, London was " the capital of the world, " with an empire that stretched across every hemisphere (the sun never sat on the British empire). And to put things in perspective, Moctezuma II, the ruler of the Aztec empire, in 1502 declared the holy city of Tenochtitlan as the " center of the Universe. " (Of course, 17 years later, Cortez and the Spaniards arrived, killing Moctezeuma and razing the city -- I personally hold accountable for the actions of her ancestors ;-) New York did give us Broadway, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, the Apollo Theatre, " Cats " , Regis Philbin, and Rupert's Deli. Then again, it also gave us Steinbrenner, Paris Hilton, Trump, and Son of Sam. I still think we should hold a conference there, however. :-) Bill On 3/21/06, Alcantara <gr8t4tune@...> wrote: > > Dude, those are nice little cities but i wouldn't give them the title of > capital of the world. I do know this, Philbin would be completely thrown to have an audience of dwarves. I've seen pictures of Paris cavorting with Micky, but I doubt she's 'in town' in July. Guest guest
Bradford , I think any talk show [ Oprah , Regis, Maury, Montel } any... should host an LPA audience....all LP & their famlies.... that is a great idea! Start calling and make the suggestion. I don't recall anyone doing that type of show ever..... Plus, there are many talented and famous LPs...who do guest appearances but i can't recall a whole program of this type. It would be interesting , and show everyone that an LP is like everyone else in the world.. --------------------------------- New Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
and Group, Yes it has been done, only you probably are too young to ever have seen it on TV. Back in the late 50's or early 60's, Art Linkletter did it several times on his show, as that was my first introduction to dwarfism and to the LPA. My Mother was a realist, so she was always searching for shows that showed a realistic approach to my being a dwarf, as I was born in '55, there weren't too many shows that weren't clowns or gag acts on TV back then. So I can remember Lee Kitchens when he had a full head of dark hair, and Barty too. But that was done on CBS, in the Culver City Studio's, I believe, and it was done very tastefully too, no comedy gags on us or any other nonsense. Art Linkletter was a great guy for us, as he gave us the exposure that we needed back then. But Oprah would freak out, Regis would have to make some kind of joke about us, Maury would make us like Jerry's Kids, and Montel, he might be the one to do it, since he was a military man, he's probably the only strait shooter on TV that there is these days, besides Phil Donahue, and he's retired. But you have to do it in a place that they can set up in, rather than doing it in their studios. Donahue came to Seattle the week that the first Trident Submarine came to it's base at Bangor Washington. There was one hell of a show that day, as you had both sides of the spectrum in that audience. But going to them means they could care less about doing that show, them coming to us means they want to do it, and with dignity. Rob Re: Re: NY Conference?
