SSI question

Does any one know if it is possible to receive SSI for only a limited

amount of time such as while being a student? If one receives SSI

while in school then graduates, does this preclude being able to get

employment in the future? Or is it once on the system, always on the

system?

Any help will be appreciated.

I was on Social Security for a year before I found a job...as a

temporary solution. It is possible to get off of Social

Security...but there are things to know when you do. Like keep track

of everything and take notes and keep them from every contact with

Social Security. and make sure they stop the payments and if they

dont...keep it aside and dont spend it.

I hope that answers your question.

" You " may also want to look into options available through vocational rehab.

When I was in college, they not only paid all expenses, but also provided a nice

monthly stipend for general needs.

I can tell you my story, but things may have changed. I got SSI when

I was 18 because my dad died. Because I was also disable (a three

inch medical folder later) they put me on a status called a " disable

adult child " which just meant I was collecting on my fathers benefit,

but I was also disable. I went to college and back then as long as

you were in school you cold collect survivors benefits, I believe

that has changed.

When I got out of college I got a job. I didn't anticipate the SSI

to continue, because back then I could work and dern it I was going

to!!!! They over paid me a year (which I banked) and then wanted the

money back, and they proposed a per month settlement which I took.

Then in my 30's it became very apparent that working was becoming

very detrimental to my quality of life. Not that I did anything

terrible taxing, except I am not a healthy dwarf and if I continued

to work I was heading for quick immobility. I was seriously

bumming..... I had gone far in the company I was in (although shortly

afterward they went down the tubes!) and again applied for SS.

Because of my past status as being recognized as 'disable " I was able

to pick up the SS relatively easily. But, I am investigated quite

regularly. Not that I blame them, but the conditions are not about

to change...

So, short answer.... it depends why you are currently getting SS if

benefits continue. If you are considered disable, than I would say

they would continue until you were deemed able.

New rules also allow people to work for longer periods of time

without loss of their payment benefits (not sure about insurance) I

got something I think it was last year that said they were trying to

allow people to feel safer about " trying " to work, without the fear

of loosing their benefits if it didn't work out.

To tell you a story... my neice has gone back and forth (on and off)

SS at least 4 times, because she keeps trying to work, only to have

something else " go " . She's a trouper, and they never give her any

trouble about re-upping.

Plan for Achieivng Self Support (PASS) is a work Incentive. If a person qualifies for SSI and they have a secondary income the SSI will be reduced. The PASS program allows a person to save the secondary income in a special account to use the money for something that will increase their self sufficeny (tuition for school, assistive technology, etc) When the money is in the PASS account it becomes exempt and the SSI amount is not reduced. The purpose is to assist people to save for something that will reduce dependency on SSI. If you need the money to pursue a vocational goal then, yes, it can be used for employment, for example a job coach can be paid out of a PASS plan or a sign language interpreter, etc. The consumer comes out

ahead because they would have lost the money due to the secondary income and now with the PASS saving s account they get to keep the money for something to help them improve their employment status.

Its a 14 page applicaton if you have someone that would benefit from a PASS plan contact your local CWIC and they will fill it out for you, if you do not know who that is send me your county name and I'll get your the number.

SSI Question

Ok, I'm confused a little. Is PASS a program where the SSI benefitsare used to achieve the goal of employment? Or is there other moniesavailable to use? Thanks,Patt(mother of a son who has Aspergers and Dyslexia)

, Thanks for your help. I will contact the ARC. Is there anyone in particular there that I should ask for? Lenore Varey Lawrence <mrsmlawrence@...> wrote: Answer to question about claiming your Son on your taxes as a dependant when they are on

SSI: Call the ARC at 708-206-1930, this is more of a guardian question than an SSA question and I was advised to send you to the ARC because they handle this all the time. What about SSDI because I am pretty sure that is what he gets. He has Medicare A and B and he gets my insurance as a secondary. Between SSDI and work he gets about $1300 a Month. I was told he gets too much for Medicaid. PACT wont help with future living placements unless he has Medicaid. Remember me? I am so confused. What benefits could he be getting? There are so many questions, thank you for taking the time to help us. Lawrence <mrsmlawrence@...> wrote:

Yes a 401k counts toward assets for Medicaid and SSI, HBWD is Health Benefits for Workers with Disabilities, its a Medicaid Buy-in program. HBWD has higher asset limits than general Medicaid and higher income levels so if he wants to apply for this he has a better chance than with general Medicaid. SSI Question Here is another question. My son is 25 and gets SSDI and works part time for Jewel. Is he able to put money into a 401K? Will this effect his SSDI as far as assets? I think he can only have like $2,000.00 in assets?

oooooh, I remember you . You need to call Marsie Frawley and ask her about the housing issue 312-223-9600 and complete the HBWD application it will meet PACTS requirements. As for assets with SSDI there is none, Trump is eligible for his SSDI if he becomes disabled. There is no asset limit for Medicare either.
