New Year's traditions

I am wondering what people's New Year traditions are, around the US and beyond?

We are both past our partying days, so we'll have a quiet evening at home.

Many of our neighbors will shoot firecrackers, so we will spend a lot of time

reassuring the dogs that the world is not coming to an end.

We will have a meal including black-eyed peas and cabbage. My grandmother

said that the tradition of black-eyed peas bringing good luck went back to the

days when people lived from their gardens/farms. If you still had plenty of

dried peas to prepare in January, you were likely to have enough to get you

through to spring. I have heard that cabbage is symbolic of money.

What do you do on your side of the pond, Fred?

Alyce?
