Hi Sharon~

It looks like Kelsey is just kind of scared to put any weight on her legs. I

would make sure she has plenty of Tylenol, or whatever the doc gave her for

pain. It really does hurt in the beginning to start to walk again. I wouldn't

push it very much, just have her take a couple steps now and then, and she will

see that it's ok.

I don't remember how long it took my Amy to start again, but I think it was

around a week. She really didn't want to walk at all, either. Just let her take

her time, and she will figure it out. Maybe the idea of starting school, meeting

new friends, wearing her new outfits will be enough of a motivation to get her

going. I wonder what she would think of maybe going out for an ice cream,

(really special) if she would do the walking? Maybe take a little walk, and get

a new toy at the toy store? I think a little bribery here would go a long way!

Keep me posted~ I will try and think of some other new ideas!

Double Tib Osteotomy - Need Advice

Hi All:

My daughter, Kelsey, (7-year achon) underwent osteotomies on both lower legs

last January. She was in long leg casts until this past March. She has done

very well recuperating from the surgery. This past Monday we had the hardware

(plates and screws) removed. We were told that it was an out patient procedure

and that she could walk the same day. Well, she was in recovery for almost 5

hours (trouble with getting pain controlled) and it is now Thursday and she

still refuses to put any weight on her legs, much less move them. We changed

the bandages last night and the incisions look good. She starts school on

Tuesday and, at this point, I cannot even get her to put shoes on!!! Can anyone

else give me some feedback on how long I should expect it to take to get her

back on her feet? Also, I'm concerned about her fracturing her legs. I was not

given soft casts or anything. Just told to not let her jump or run! Easier

said than done for a 7-year old. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Sharon

That was a wonderful suggestion Patty.

Bribery with a 7 year old , especially with toys or ice-cream is bound to

get you somewhere!

Hi Patty: Thanks for the advice. We were able to remove the bandages last

night (actually Kelsey did :-) and I think just seeing that her legs didn't look

that bad helped. She even stood up briefly on her walker. She had her

orientation at school this morning and everyone was very encouraging. I think

she will give it her best effort this weekend. I've promised her a big surprise

if she tries real hard. I think we are on our way now. Just need to get

through the first week of school!! Thanks again, Sharon
