Guest guest
: At your relatively young age, you might at least inquire about a ceramic bearing. This material is purported to generate less " debris " than metal/poly. Since this debris is what causes osteolysis and subsequent aseptic loosening, these (relatively new devices, recently approved by FDA) ceramic/ceramic bearings sound as if they might offer a longer implant life. If I were having THR today (at age 60) even I would ask if ceramic was right for me. I have two metal/poly hips done 2 years ago. I'm very happy with my newfound pain-free life and you can achieve that with either bearing material. It's the long term that might be of some concern. > > > > > > > Hello, > My name is . I am 43 years old. I am a dancer and I have " advanced " osteoarthritis in my right hip. I have scheduled surgery with the terrific Dr. Padgett. I, however, still have concerns and questions I need to address: > > My Dr. recommends THR with metal/poly components - What do you think about this material vs other available material? > What do you think about THR vs hip resurfacing? > What can you tell me about hip revision surgery? > > Thanks very much, > elizabeth > elimoze@a... Guest guest
Dr s has a glowing reputation from the resurfacing community. I don't know for sure of his skills in THR, but he was part of the FDA trials for resurfacing and the manufacturers, I'm sure, chose the best for their trials. If you are conferring with him, ask him about resurfacing, too. That procedure is far less likely to result in unequal leg length. It lasts longer, too. Guest guest
Has anyone had leg length descrepency from THR? >>> Mine was corrected during the surgery but not a result of having THR done.
Guest guest
physio measured my legs and said that my operated leg was 15mm short.......surgeon measured it and says it is about 10mm long. >>> I was always told the biggest difference in LD is whether it's structural which is considered congenial, trauma caused etc. or functional which is more a result of spine problems, muscle weakness, restricted limb motions etc. One is correctable by mere therapitic moves and change of habit while the other is generally corrected surgerically. There are many different ways to measure limb differences. My doctor measures from the anterior superior iliac spine to the medial malleolus which gives actual difference. You can also be measured by x~ray, obversations etc. I know of some doctors that don't consider the "actual" measurement but instead use the process of incremental improvements over a period of time to find your "balance". That has lil to do with your actual leg difference but rather is measured by what you feel to be the more comfortable difference to be corrected. That's done over time so that your system doesn't get a huge shock <for lack of better words>. Like when I first started with a shoe build.... although my actual descrepency was noted doc felt best to go with my comfort in balance. Although my difference was nearly 3" my build started at 1/2" and was upped every 3 months until I felt "balanced". My actual build was only a lil shy of 2" inches and I left it that way because my back seemed to have less problems. I don't understand why they would've come up with 2 very different measurements even doing it 2 different ways they should've at least been agreed upon "long" or "short" of it~ whether the actual measurement was the very same or not. Maybe third measurement will be a charm for ya ? I certainly wouldn't consider having a build of any kind until you varify what's what. That's odd to say the least. Guest guest
I had both my hips done. After my first hip, I had an LLD of 1/2 inch which was only noticable when I was barefoot. My OS corrected it to 1/12 inch during my second surgery. I think LLD is pretty common and if you don't have bilateral surgeries you may need to wear a shoe lift for comfort and healthy gait. Guest guest
Oooooo.... I'm just a week post-op now. When I first got up after surgery it felt like my right leg was about an inch or so shorter than my left (the leg that had the surgery). I've had a slight (1/2") discrepancy for many years, but it felt like a lot more post-op. The dr. said he went for stability as opposed to length and that my new hip would compress somewhat. Once it was determind that it was done compressing, we'd re-address the length issue then. Hope this helps... lee ******** "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming 'WOW What a Ride!'" Guest guest
I have an interesting situation. My physio measured my legs and said that my operated leg was 15mm short. The surgeon measured it and says it is about 10mm long. Physio wants me to have a lift fitted to my shoe because he believes the strain on already weakened muscles is too much. He says I have an " interesting " walk. I often notice him watching me walking while I am working. Aussie Margaret Re: THR I had both my hips done. Guest guest
I,too have had 3 different measurements..? Meanwhile I am being my own advocate..I have researched & verified what you say, about introducing lesser size lift then measured so that you foot, spine adjusts gradually..I started to have pain big time since I have been walking lopsided!!! I have started with a adjustable clear plastic lift I found on the net.now waiting for opinion from therapist about an orthodic after he consults with another doc.??? Ghheezzzz, it would be nice to have been informed pre surgery & measured prior so we can have a comparison. I was not like this before surgery!!! How long post op before EVERYTHING is settled? Hip & legs.....? __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I met one of Dr. s' resurf patients in December - he was extremely happy with the outcome, the care at Good Samaritan and Dr. s. His name is Jim and he sometimes posts on SurfaceHippy (surfacehippy/). You might try a post there to see if he responds. Guest guest
Sharon. I have not been able to read this board for several days. but just read your post. You probably had several replies, comments, however, I thought I would share my experience.I am 4 months post THR. 1st. Have you contacted your OS? 2nd. Do you have, take, pain meds for your discomfort? Had,have, been doing PT? Are you being too aggressive in PT and/or activities? Recently I had a short period of time when the pain had diminished to some degree.I had slacked up on doing PT..Hip & muscles in operated leg, thigh, started to be somewhat painful again. After a couple of weeks I stared to do Water exercises. per my OS. After 2 weeks I see an improvement.although I still have pain from time to time, depends on how much I do steps.( I have steps coming into my house & basement for laundry & 2nd fl for my office, computer. I have learned to take it easy for a few days, except water PT. when the pain returns.I take pain meds when "it hurts" Hope you have gained info & support from us "Hippies." Take care & let us know. for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Guest guest
, You poor kid. You live in N.J., I can only say 2 words to you. Dr. Hartzband!. Please go see him if anything else happens. He's in Paramus, just across from Garden State Plaza and he's the best in the state. All he does is TKR's & THR's. He did both my knees in September & I wouldn't let anyone else touch my legs at this point.
