How did you determine when to return to driving -- The PT person said

(off the record of course) that I could start driving but probably

shouldn't drive for long periods in heavy traffic -- which probably

defines all of Los Angeles driving except at 5 AM -- My leg tends to

get stiff/uncomfortable if I sit for an extended period of time.

Did you venture out with a friend -- go for an errand.

It's been 3 weeks out and I am also cleared to walk around without

the walker -- the PT told me to let pain and fatigue be my guide --

astounding how out of shape I am :)

If you can hit the brakes hard in an emergency without pain and ruin

it is ok to drive. Not on pain meds either.

Good advice. This time I'm trying to be a little more organized. I've hired a retired CNA to help with the med appt's and errands this time. She's done this for other people as well. Her last job paid her $8. ph, and no extra for gas. I'll pay her $10. p.h. plus gas, so am thinking this is going to work out very well.

Well since my TKR was on my right knee, I didn't drive until 6 or 7 weeks

out and it hurt a lot and I didn't drive much. Now I'm 11 weeks out and I

just got back from a trip where I drove half of the 350 miles each way. It

makes me a little sore but not a problem as long as I use the cruise control

and stretch my leg.

I think how long depends on which leg has been operated on since the right

leg does most of the work. Well in the States anyway, I guess that would be

reversed in England, and do you drive on the left in Australia?

:

Driving is the same anywhere, as the pedals are in the same order for left-

and right-hand drive cars: gas on the right, brake in the middle, clutch on

the left. The steering wheel array is the same, too-- the only difference

is the position of the wheel, dashboard and pedals (and, of course, the side

of the road you drive on). Years ago I rented a car in England, and for the

first few minutes, when I wanted to shift gears, I almost opened the door

(shift is in the middle for both styles). On automatics it's only the right

foot that does any work. I was driving 6 weeks after my left hip, 10 after

the right. No cruise control-- it's not legal in Israel.

Anyone still taking meds should check the local laws... Some painkillers,

especially those with codiene, can give positive readings on breathalyzers.
