Guest guest
G'day Lindy and welcome to the group. People here are extremely helpful and I am sure you will receive lots of useful answers to your queries. I cannot help as I term myself a "replacement virgin". The doctor won't refer me to a specialist until I have lost 30kg in weight and says I then won't need the surgery. In the mean time I am caught in exactly the situation you describe ... too much pain for exercise and therefore little ability to control weight gain. My friend, Aussie Margaret, who is also a member of this group, might also suggest that my eating and drinking habits contribute to excess weight as well! I can relate easily to your comments on restriction of activities. I currently have a myriad of personal projects together with full-time employment and grandchildren to spoil and adore, but I am finding it more and more difficult to get around the place. Margaret even had the cheek to tell me that mowing my lawn on a ride-on mower while enjoying a glass of ice cold chardonnay did not constitute useful exercise!!! Once again, thanks for joining us! Aussie Hi! I'm new as of right now. ;-) I'm Lindy. I'll be 58 on the 10th, ugh. I live in NW Wisconsin, married, 1 dog, 2 children, 5 grandchildren. I love to read, write, collect dolls, do crafts and just enjoy life. However, due to my bad hip, I'm enjoying life less and less. I can't do anything anymore. I went to an Orthopaedic doctor a couple weeks ago who confirmed I do need THR. My husband works on a ship and will be gone til mid-January, so I have to wait til then to have the surgery -- so he's here when I get out, to care for me.I would like to know what the average hospital stay is, how long is the average recovery period, how bad the pain level is after the surgery, does one walk with a limp afterward. i know i'll have other questions as well. :-)I've had several other surgeries in my life, but for some reason, this one really frightens me -- guess due to my weight, I'm afraid to go under, but I know I can't lose weight until I can exercise again, which I certainly cannot do right now.Has anyone here had a really bad experience with THR or any of the risks involved? Is anyone here from the Duluth, MN/Superior, WI area?I'm glad I found all of you.Lindy Its simple! Too much pain to do any exercise and pain meds that don't quite do the job. Guest guest
---Hi , I replied to your post with a private message about hip resurfacing. There was some personal info in the message and that's why I sent it by private message. Anyway, check your email, and if it's not there, check your junk mail just in case your email doesn't allow anyone who isn't in your address book. I had excellent results with a hip resurfacing and I recommend it to anyone who is a good candidate for it. ..... Guest guest
thank you aussie john people here sure are helpful. i'm so grateful for all of you. this is so insane that you only need to lose 30 lbs. and yet your doc won't do the surgery for you. have you tried another doc. i have about 80 lbs. to lose and i questioned the doc whether or not my weight would interfer with my surgery, going under, etc. and he said he's not worried about it and also said, you can't exercise to lose weight until you can walk and you can't walk til you have the surgery. i hope you find a solution soon aussie john. i too have so many unfinished projects -- plus we're having a new home put here on our property in the spring, which means packing everything up and storing it all while our mobile home is moved and our new modular home is set up. i just cannot invision my husband packing everything properly. UGH! i see lots of broken items. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, a rider mower and wine -- sounds like exercise to me, you have to actually get on the mower, that's exercise and then lifting the glass to your mouth, again - exercise. i don't see margaret's point. Guest guest
Hi Lindy I too can not work. Last year I applied for disability and was refused too!! because eventually I will have TKR and be able to go back to work. In the meantime what does one do??? I am lucky to have a wonderful and employed husband, but things do get tight sometimes. I used to collect dolls from the Ashton Drake Company, but have ran out of room in our home!!! So now I make cards - and I absolutely love it - I do rubber stamping. It keeps my mind thinking to come up with new designs and I love seeing the end result. So on my good days that's what I do. Take care..... lindy <everyothername.istaken@...> wrote: hi valerie, thansk for the nice welcome. i'm enjoying this list more than any other list i've been on, even my barbie lists -- i collect barbie dolls. yes it is true, i'm almost 58 and i play with dolls. Guest guest
Yep, Aussie is a lovely man. There were some rather misfortunate hickups with my surgery this week and he has been a great help. Sometimes just having someone to bitch to helps. He has great empathy with people. One thing that might be useful to the group is that the doctor told me to tell people I am alergic to cortisone because it makes me teary etc. He said that way it won't accidently be given to me like it was this week, even after I had told literally everyone I was agreeing to the proceedure on the condition I was not given cortisone. I hadn't flagged it as an allergy because I did not classify it in that way. Doctors in theatre went into autopilot and injected cortisone. The say if it had been flagged as an alergy it wouldn't have happened. Seems doctors don't read charts these days. Guest guest
Y'know, this has made me think that the OS demand for the patient to lose weight before they'll operate may be based on the assumption that the patient is lazy and won't make an effort to lose weight after the surgery. But with new knees/hips/whatever, after being imprisoned for so long, who wouldn't want to get out there and at least walk around the block every day? At you lose weight, you'll be able to do more, so you'll lose more weight. I'm glad your doctor sees it that way, Lindy. I hope others wake up, or maybe us patients have to do a little selling.
