Hi all,

I went to the hospital Monday to donate my second unit of blood. I had donated my first unit 2 weeks earlier. Predictably, my blood count was somewhat down. The technician told me it takes about 2 - 2-and-a-half months for the body to completely replace a unit of blood. She suggested I start taking an iron supplement. I'm seeing my doctor today (about various things) - will ask about it. I would imagine that this will be important for the healing process after the surgery - it seems logical that the healing will be slower if the blood is depleted. A friend of mine who had THR here a few months ago said that she had persistent low-grade fever after the surgery, and that they found she was anaemic and attributed the fever to that. They then started giving her iron supplement.

When they took my blood-pressure at the hospital, they also heard irregularities in my heartbeat, which they said I should get checked - so I'm going today for ECG at my local clinic. (I went yesterday - but the machine was not working, they were getting it fixed, said it should be ok today.) I've never had heart-irregularities before - so hope it's nothing more serious than stress! I also have an appointment at the endocrinology clinic - need their authorisation that I'm fit for the surgery, since my bloodwork showed various above-limit levels (calcium and something else that my doctor says indicates possible overactive parathyroid...) All slightly worrying as I wasn't aware of these problems before. Maybe presurgical stress brings all sorts of other hidden things to the surface....

My surgery is due one week from today (Wed 21st July) - am keeping my fingers crossed that nothing will cause it to be delayed! I'm finding these last few days rather stressful...

I know what you mean, Marge! Luckily I have no-one here to be snappy at except the cat... and she doesn't mind! She's a great comfort to me.

I still have some arrangements to make - like finding someone to help me put blocks under my bed to raise it.... and shopping to do.... food supplies for when I come home...

Apart from that, I'm passing my time reading, watching tv, chatting on internet, tending my garden....

My garden is a real haven. Sitting by my fishpond in the cool of early morning or evening (after the intense daytime heat has passed) and watching my fish feed and play... is especially soothing!

Wishing you all the best (and to anyone else going through the surgery during these days). This time next week we shall hopefully both be post-surgery "graduates"!

Margaret
