Guest guest
Do you really have to be quite fit to recoup what you lost?? >>> atrophy *muscle loss~ which ever you wish to call it... isn't a good thing.... but hard work in PT can regain the majority in some cases even "better then" what you had before surgery. I don't think that 100% is ever achievable after the body has been whacked on.... but 98% I'd agree to. you can see I am soooooo anxious about everything... sorry folks... >>> No sorry needed.... I had 11 major reconstructive surgeries prior to my actual THR not to mention tonsils & other issues..... and I still get the nerves when they schedule the date & I know it's coming! We that have remained on the boards after surgery do it for the support, encouragement and information we can help provide to others fixing to walk in our shoes. Plus it's a benefit to us having others "relate" to what we're going through~ but the hugest reason being... WE UNDERSTAND the hole process... from the nerves before hand of "is this the right thing to do" to the actual surgery steps and "OMG what if it don't go right" to the pains of PT, frustrations of limited moblity & wanting to DO during the recovery.... and after effects~ such as wondering how long it's gonna last. Sheesh though... there is still a list of things I didn't mention. We are here for ya should ya need a shoulder to lean upon... and don't feel bad about asking to use it. We are now the shoulders... because we once ourselves used them.
Guest guest
Hi Eva, I'm going to have my other hip replaced on Jan 23rd, so I';ll be in and out before you. I had my first hip done in May of '04, which I postponed for over 6 months before going in. This time, I made the arrangements in a little under a month!! It's certainly normal to be nervous if you've never before experienced major surgery, as I hadn't last time. No, once the incision heals, the muscles are retrained through exercise and Physical Therapy, you're not aware of having an aritficial joint. It just donesn't hurt anymore!! I felt as if I was given my life back after about 6 weeks of recuperation. Of course, if you're used to being very active, not being able to go anyplace or do very much for over a month can be frustrating, but hang in there, and things will get much better afterwards. This site can be very helpful. Log on often. Charl in CTparea10 <parea10@...> wrote: Dear folks,I am really glad to have a site such as this. I am having a THR on Feb 23 and have so many questions. The one that I have actually dreamed about is: What does it feel like to have an artificial joint...I mean does it feel like there is something foreign in your body or just that there is pain from the surgery??Also would love to hear from anyone who has had THR at the Hospital for Special Surgery.I am very nervous about all of this but after ALL conservative methods have failed and have lost my ability to walk I guess this is the only thing left. Also am confused because most of the pain and walking disablitly coming from my lower leg and low back (I do have stenosis and a buging disk) Back doctor says that is my problem mainly...hip doctor says hip is causing it!Thanks for the help....Eva M. Guest guest
Thank you thank you for the quick respones from Midge and Charlotte... I think my biggest fear is that I will go through this major surgery and not be better at all....know it sounds stupid but since the docs couldn't agree on which was the major cause of my problems you can see where that would leave me....have been to second opinions for both the hip and the back and the seconds couldn't agree either... More questions....since I can't really exercise anymore over the last month....things really have gone downhill fast...I always went to the pool and did water exercises ala " heal your own hips " ....will I be so out of shape that rehab won't go well either?? Do you really have to be quite fit to recoup what you lost?? ...you can see I am soooooo anxious about everything...sorry folks... > Dear folks, > I am really glad to have a site such as this. Guest guest
I think my biggest fear is that I will go through this major surgery and not be better at all... Oh, dear. Please stop focusing on what might go wrong. Visualize yourself as well and not hurting. Think about that all the time. It may sound trite, but people tend to find what they are looking for, so be careful what you look for. If you watch all the time that you are healing for something to go wrong, what do you suppose will happen? I wish for you [ like our Sassy always says ] well-walking! Guest guest
Before I had my first hip done I was wheelchair bound. Sure, I needed to do some hard yards after the surgery, although not as hard as I expected. It is surprising how fast it comes back. Good luck with it.
