In the responses to my question about stomach exercises, someone mentioned Pilates exercises - so I did a google search and found a lot of information. It seems to be a very suitable method both before and after hip replacement - you lie down, and the exercises are non-weight-bearing and gentle on the joints, and especially good for hips, thighs and abdomen. And I was particularly pleased to find a licenced teacher here in Israel, less than an hour's drive from my home! I immediately phoned him, and hope to start as soon after my surgery as the doctors will allow me, and as soon as I'm able to drive. I've got so overweight and flabby over the past couple of years - I really need to get back into condition!

Has anyone here used these exercises? What's your experience with them?

Thanks,

Margaret

Hi margaret

I've been using Pilates mat based exercises for several years -

since I was advised to give up high impact exercise, and I found it

before my op to keep things in shape - the stomach exercises are the

best I've ever found and did wonders for my back because they work

on your core muscles which help to stabilise your spine.

Post op, the Pilates teaching on posture has helped and some of the

exercises I was given by my Physio were so similar to Pilates ones

that I found them easy to understand. I am now 5 months post op and

incorporating more of the Pilates routines into my Physio routine to

keep other areas in shape and to relieve the boredom of doing the

same things every day! My Physio actually went on a course to relate

pilates to Physio practise while she was treating me so she approved

of what I was doing. I think it's a great form of exercise, THR or

not!!

Good luck with it

Hi Margaret

Good luck for your op! I am in Leicestershire. Have you come across

the Lynne Pilates stuff - I've used her videos & DVD's -

she is an ex teacher and I find her explanations of the exercises

easy to follow - I have purchased some from Amazon since my op.might

be worth a try. I am off to France for 3 weeks on Friday, so I hope

to catch up with your progress when I get back.

Hope it all goes well for you and your cousin

Lesley
