Hi, anyone out there who has had a replacement fail after 6 or 7

years? I am having pain and problems -- nebulous answers from the

Doctor except that the second surgery is worse than the first. Jan

My RTHR would have been 6 years old on July 3. However, I am getting

a revision June 7. At about 2 years it made a strange sound. Sort

of a pop or crack. I was walking at the time and I could not put

weight on it for a few seconds. This happened again walking and

while bending into my SUV. My doc thought it might be loosening, but

the head of the department said no and try PT. I did and it helped.

By the way I never had PT post op out patient. So in August 2002 we

were in a car accident and the knee hit the dash and pushed the hip.

That January it did the pop/crack thing and it went down hill from

there. Finally you can see that it is very loose on x ray.

I am not overweight, nor overly active for 47. It is a Zimmer

metal/poly cemented THR. My revision will be the same.

I just had a revision 6 wks ago for a failed hip that lasted only

7.5 yrs. It had loosened, but prior to loosening it was never right

and for 7.5 yrs I couldnt walk with a normal gait.

I delayed for a long time thinking that a revision would be no

better and that the second time around wouldnt be as good nor as

easy as the first. Turns out the second is easier and I can walk

better now than I ever could with the first. I think it all has to

do with the docs skill.

If you're not comfortable with your docs answers I'd get at least

one other opinion. There just is no reason to stick with one doc.

Theres no doubt in my mind that the skill of the OS makes all the

difference in the world.

If I knew that the second would be so much better I would not have

waited so long.

A revision is where they fix the THR you already have in place.

Hopefully just my stem will be replaced. The ball, cup and socket

should be okay. It not I will get new.
