I really believe everyone is different and we would be better not to compare

their journey with ours. Another thing is that there seems to be more pain

with knees than with hips.

I would rather see him taking pills round the clock than not taking enough

to make himself " comfortable " . The physio is difficult for knees and he

needs to take enough pain medication so that his PT is not disrupted.

Good luck with it. Support him, hug him, encourage him and make him move.

I've "only" done hip replacements, but my OS always said that "from the surgeon's viewpoint, a THR is more difficult, from the patient's viewpoint (rehab & pain management), a TKR is more difficult."

Having been in an Orthopedic ward with almost exclusively THR & TKR patients, I think I can vouch for this. The "knee folks" had a rougher post-op time than us "hippies". For all that, in both cases, the pain you feel and the rehab progess is always individual.

After my second THR, they couldn't get me out of the ward fast enough... the day after surgery, I switched from walker to crutches, and by 3 days post-op, I was going up and down stairs... the head PT wanted me out, because I was "depressing the others", whose progess was slower!

BTW, after the first night after surgery, I never took another painkiller, either time. Not everybody is as lucky as this-- I had a very good, very experienced OS and team, a great team of nursing & PT staff both in the hospital and at my healthcare plan clinic, and a positive attitude from day 1 (after I almost ran away from the hospital the night before my first surgery... the only thing that stopped me was the bone-on-bone pain).

Tell him to hang in there... it gets better.

Oh yes. Two week is not out of order at all. He should be able to

sean himself down soon though. Different people need to take pin meds

longer than others.

What a wise and thoughtful answer, Margaret! My surgeon told me knee replacement is as painful as it gets when it comes to surgery. Well I don't agree. I think sharing our experience helps other

understand and also they may have the same problems and it can give

them direction instead of them believing they are out there alone with

an experience that no one else has thus the worry. I hope we are all

adult enough to realize that others experience doesn't mean that ours

will be the same.

I don't want to speak for Margaret, subt since she's on travel, I'll jump in. I believe she was making the very valid point that that Sherry can't compare her hip surgery to her husband's knee surgery, because he will probably need to be on more meds for a longer period of time. I think Margaret would be one of the first to say the sharing of common problems that goes on at this site is invaluable. And, Sherry, what a lucky guy your husband is that you're doing this research and taking such good care of him. :-) I hope he's doing better this week? Well i agree to that. In that incident that is comparing apples and

oranges. You can[t compare a hip to a knee surgery I don't think.

Maybe I am wrong.

Hi guys

as I have had both hip and knee replacements I can honestly tell you a hip replacement was a walk in the park compared to knee replacement surg

Less pain, less drainage, less of everything
