Guest guest
Hi Fred, I had a total hip replacement and a total knee replacement the hip I had done five years ago and the knee about three years ago in Nov. I was 56 when I had my hip operation I'm taking Vioxx 25 mg two times a day I take one in the morning and one at night just make sure you eat I haven't had any side affects I surprise your dr didn't want to do a Hip replacment on you there is this site that tells you about differant operation www.zimmer.com they tell you what dr you could go to for these operations Regards juneflower60 or Susiejobit107 <sinatrafella@...> wrote: Fifty one year old male. I'm not surprised since I've been in pain for over 10 years, and my activities have either become incredibly more painful or impossible to do. I can walk short distance alright, but after sitting for a while it's usually with a pronounced limp and a lot of pain.I was very active before this, and I missed the activity level I was at before the recent downward spiral began (about 2 years ago).Anyway, my question. The doc suggested Vioxx, since I've never been on anti-inflammatories, but I wonder about the side effects. And if it just masks or covers up the pain, can't I do damage to other parts of my body...since the hips have almost no movement.I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.Fred
Guest guest
Hey Fred, it's . I was taking vioxx 25 mg 2x a day for about a year and a half prior to my surgery April 1st and before that it was 1x a day for about 2 years. I didn't feel any adverse side effects from it, however when I was going for my surgery the dr who was assigned to clear me for surgery was very concerned that he made sure I did not have any internal intestinal bleeding, ulcers, other digestive tract issues prior to surgery because he said that can sometimes happen with vioxx. I was okay, I don't know if this has happened to many people who take vioxx, or if it is a rarity, but as I said I was fine. I found that the vioxx was the only thing that gave me any relief or peace in my last years prior to my hip replacement. In the end however, even that didn't help enough for me to get through the day chasing after 2 young children. I was able to continue to do yoga however, and I found that the vioxx helped me to stay active as much as I could right up to my surgery. Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck. - :-) > Fifty one year old male. I went to the hip surgeon who told me I have > no cartilage left in either hip....after taking x-rays. Guest guest
I've had bad experiences with Vioxx.. I managed to give myself a stomach ulcer with too much nurofen, and now vioxx just makes me lose my stomach contents on a very regular basis.. Now after my THR last March, I have gone cold turkey, and never felt better! Guest guest
Hi Fred, I havent tried Vioxx, but plenty of other antinflamatories and I have found that they work for a few weeks to months for the pain but your walking and pain continues to deteriorate, maybe due to the little bit of increased activity you can do. Having put up with the pain for a similar time to you I decided to have the THR. If you are bone on bone and have hardly any hip movement (I'm similar) it might be worth investigating surgery? I know most surgeons dont like to operate until you insist that the pain is debilitating but I wish I didnt have so long to wait till my surgery. Hope the tablets work better for you than they have for me. I may even ask my doc about this Vioxx drug as it is not commonly prescribed in the uk-I have been prescribed voltarol (another antinflamatory) and take paracetamol with coedine, both of which dont help Anybody think that Vioxx is better than this voltarol (diclophenac)? I'm thinking of a change while I wait for surgery best of luck, Leigh

It was making me swell and I also got a stomach ulcer. Vera
