Guest guest
Congratulations, Shirl! I can't believe it has already been a year. I was a contact for you. It's wonderful to see how successful you have been. I agree that it has truly changed my whole life. I have noticed that when I walk now I hold my head high with my back straight instead of hunched over trying to hide from the world. Pretty amazing! Dana Thorneburg, NP Center for Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery 704-682-0133 704-871-0031 ONE year update Hi all, Well, one year ago tonight I was as nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I was hours away from having MY dance with Dr Rutledge, February 6, 2002, at 10:15am. I was a miserable 373 lb and ready for a new beginning. One year later, I weigh 218 lb, a loss of 155 lb, and am no longer miserable. I am off all medications, can walk miles without stopping to rest, can go up stairs without running out of breath, don't get stared at everywhere I go, (especially restaurants), don't think about the next meal, can sleep like a baby, buy clothes off the rack and not from catalogs, and have a new outlook on life. For those who want to know if there have been any complications or downside to the surgery, sure, a few minor bumps along the way. H. Pylori about a month after, but with the prev-pac prescribed by Dana, all was cleared up in a couple weeks. Reflex several times the first few weeks, but now it is very rare and usually follows eating too much or the wrong food and usually eating too late at night. I have never " dumped " and am very happy to say that. The first 2 weeks was liquids, yogurts, mashed potato, etc. The next 3 weeks was soft food and phase 3 almost anything I want, just in small amounts. I do not drink milk, liquor, carbonated beverages, coffee, but do have a cup of tea occasionally to treat myself. (I use " coffee tamer " which reduces the tannic acid in coffee and tea.) I do get dehydrated if I don't drink Gatorade regularly. I almost always have a bottle of the clear Gatorade within reach and sip on it all day long. If I forget, I get light headed or dizzy, a sign of dehydration. It was about month 8 before I tried steak or roast beef. I can eat these now but must chew them well. I find a high protein breakfast (2 poached or scrambled eggs) or oatmeal are favorites. Usually soup or salad for lunch, and whatever the wife cooks for supper. It is difficult to go more than 4 hours between meals and sometimes a small snack is necessary. I find that I can still eat sweets but just in small amounts. (As I sit and write this, I have been snacking on some butter cookies) Well, in conclusion, I thank God every day that I was lead to Dr Rs web site. I would not change a thing that has happened. I have added years to my life because of the procedure that has been perfected by Dr Rutledge. Guest guest
Patti, Congratulations on your wonderfully successful year. You are an inspiration. I surely don't consider 120 lbs of weight loss in 1 year " slow losing " . I only pray I can do as well. Thanks for sharing your story. Guest guest
Today is my hips first birthday. I bought a cake to take to work and had them write " Hip Hip Hurray " on it. I guess this means my recovery is officially over. I believe at this point my risk of dislocating drops to 3% and stays there. Not too bad I guess. Whats my life like now? Normal is the best way to describe it. Nothing too exciting, just normal. Today was a pretty typical day for me. Worked 5 hours, 4 of them on my feet. Came home had a snack while watching Oprah. Then watered my plants, cleaned the cat box, the bunny box, the duck water dishes, plus their two wading pools. Hauled in two 50lb bags of feed. Hauled out the trash. Checked the oil in my car. I carry a tylonal tablet in my pocket most of the time. (for the other hip) some days I use it, some I don't. I would prefer to be carrying Celebrex, but can no longer get it. Today I did not need it. Did a few exorcises this morning and will do more tonight. Didn't get in an official walk, but did yesterday, and hopefully will tomorrow. Things are pretty much like they were about 5 years ago, when I knew I had arthritis, but it was not running my life. Still have my one year check up to schedule, (plus x-rays) once I get approval. I expect everything to be fine. Now, to start weaning myself off this website. No offense. And I probably won't disappear completely. It helped me so much. But it gets harder and harder to even begin to catch up. I have too much other stuff to do now. I need to get off my butt and back to it. I got so hooked though, esp. on the stories of the people that had surgery near my time that did not go well. I keep waiting it hear that everything is ok for everyone now. Well anyway, thats my story. Was it a major pain in the butt (literaly) having a hip replacement at 50? Yeah it was, but am I 100% better than I was 365 days ago? Oh yeah! Can I do what I need to do (which was my biggest fear before surgery)?? Yes, I can. Good luck to all.
Guest guest
Dear : Today is my 9th week post op. Somethings are good- others not as good as expected. Thanks for the post so that I can have hope for my 52 week aniversary- that I can get back to " normal " . Mostly I feel good, but I get tired and I hurt so easily. Just a little exercise has me pooped! Off to PT. I am doing that three times a week and I feel better (flexible) and worse (hurt and tired) after it! Guest guest
Congrats on the great report .... loved hearing every detail of it.... excluding that you intend on weaning yourself from the site. You can still do and just in your spair time keep up~ if it's only a note here & there before turning in at night. It's good encouragement for those awaiting a replacement to hear the terrific turn outs in hopes of having one for themselves. Even with mine being as it is... I keep the hopes of having my own good news to report one day.... kinda gives hope to those whom aren't as lucky with it all~ but still look for a better day. Keep the good days rolling girl.... and the only thing I would recommend you do differently is luggin the 50lbs. of feed~ haul it then yell for another to move it. LOL Take care of yourself, wear a smile and have yourself a terrific day~ Well walking 2 ya.
