Guest guest
Dear old Dude! It is so good to hear from you again. The bad times are gone, let the good times roll! Please write and tell me about your magic on your three week anniversary? I really loved this line: My pre-surgery apprehension was unfounded as the things I worried about either didn't happen or I was out at the time, and the small things I had not considered were more big emotional deals than pain. Thanks for the post. Marge He lives!
Guest guest
Hi Ben, Well your doing a lot better then me and I was 56 years old when I had my first operation which was a TRHR . Now I'm 61 and I also have arthritis in my right shoulder as long as I don't do too much with shoulder I'm ok .my dr told me not to have that replace. Well you take care. Susie or juneflower60 This is the senior citizen, the 74 yr old male.Made it back home today after surgery on may 25th, 3 days in hospital, and 11 days in rehab hospital. My condition pre-surgery had normal senior citizen ailments, except pretty sever arithritis, and not very physically active in past two years due to hip problems. Have made some postings , but not sure how medicated I was. This is a summary for any seniors contemplating hip surgery and are apprehensive. Some of the things that happened to me are funny, and you need to find some humor or you might lose your cool. My pre surgery apprehension was unfounded as the things I worried about either didnt happen or I was out at the time, and the small things I had not considered( bed pans, etc were more big emotional deals than pain.)For surgery I had the knockout gas and knew nothing. until recovery. Was in surgery three hours, versus what doc had expected would be one and half hours. He said he cleaned out some scar tissue from an old hernia wound. My gout came on strong after surgery and I was unable to put weight on my feet for about three days while I took gout medicine. Getting a ortho surgeon to treat the gout was not easy and finally he called in my primary for consultation and I got some gout medicine, took two days; when gout is flared you cant stand to touch your foot much less step on it. Had the morphine drip and maxed out first two days. Gout pain in feet could have caused some of it. Was counting on postings I had read on web site about morphine being constipatating, so much to my surprise had to call for my first bed pan, my first in 74 years by the way, second night cause couldnt put weight on feet. Had a few more of these as the pain med was having reverse affect on me, yuk, and more yuk. (Did you know bed pans come in two sizes, the large which is 4.5 inches high and try putting that under your back after hip surgery and the 2 inch small which is more comfortable under the spine but has obovious limitations.) Could not or maybe would not eat the hospital food, did not look appetizing. Family brought me package apple bars and cinnomon bars. Had shots for naseau on second and third day. They had something for everything. Went to rehab hospital and they managed to get me walking when gout subsided. Had lots of swelling in leg and still do, Doc said the groin would be painfull from scar clearout and for me to just work my way thru it. Have had more groin pain than hip pain. Ice packs seem to help that area. Thr rehab hospital was necessary to get me walking and once I got some mobility with walker, I started working to get out. My shoulder arithritis kept me from being very adept at wheel chair operation and I had that wheel chair stuck in a small bath room and between the bed and wall many times. Learning to put my clothes on with a stick in spite of shoulder arithritis plus all the other inconveniences caught up with me about day nine of post op and I hit bottom depression wise. d into next day. I think it was normal depression, and worked myself thru it as fast as I could. Got home yesterday and with sone driving took spouse to Red Lobster for dinner, me and my walker. Today took her to our favorite mexican restaurant and went shopping for a robe and a recliner chair for me to rest my leg during the day. Walked too far today on with walker and am paying the price tonight with much swelling and some pain. Will have to hit the pain pills at bed time. That's about it for me. The surgery worked as I can now walk with a walker. The pain is less than before except for my groin problem, and I hope it stays that way. ben
