Why would they send someone to a "nursing home rehab" when they could just send them to a rehab in a hospital?

______

We're talking about the same level of rehab in both cases.....its just that one is in the hospital (but requires a discharge from the actual acute hospital to the rehab area) while the other is a special section of a nursing home. The idea of setting up these nursing home units is that it costs less, but the healthcare staff and assistance is the same, as is the amount of rehab time per day.

A hospital will tend to try to keep its own rehab unit full before discharging to a nursing home rehab, but in some cases, the person wants to go to the nursing home rehab because its close to home, or even for the more relaxed pace and potentially slightly longer stay. In either place, the first two weeks are fully paid by Medicare, while after that, its an 80% - 20% split with secondary insurance or self pay.

Sometimes, the hospital rehab unit is full, as they will often take people from other acute hospitals to fill the beds. The other thing is that the hospital unit will pick and choose what patients it wants according to its own criteria, so some people who want to go there will still be told that the nursing home setting is better for them.

The decision to go to rehab in a hospital based unit vs. a nursing home

unit is a decision based on beds available, and which facility best

meets the needs of the individual patient. Also, insurance/medicare

reimbursement is a factor, not all facilities honor the same

insurance. In some respects these rehab facilities are in direct

competetion to each other. Some times the nursing home rehab centers

are just plain nicer than the hospital, and the pace is a bit slower

there, making the patient feel less pressured, even though the

requirements for rehab are the same.

Often the choice is location. If you live out of the big city, most

folks want to go back to their home town to do their rehab.

I wish you could tour some of these nicer nursing home SNF units.

I think you would be able to get past your mind block.

I have no idea why your doctor said NO to regular rehab, or why you wern't on the "Part A Medicare" section of the nursing home. maybe it was so small that it just certified all the beds rather than a certain section. That's probably a very good case for going around and checking out the nursing home Short Term Rehab facilities in your area and asking the right questions before you have your surgery. I cold name three such Rehab units in my small town area right here tht I would have been happy to go to.

I have a negative reaction to your comment toward Al, " Don't ask

us. " People on this site should have the right to ask any question

they want without personal bias and judgment aimed at them. If we do

not have that freedom, I do not want to be a part of this site.

People, ask what ever you want! YOU ARE FREE!!! If you ain't free,

it's time that we become free!!!! Where's when we need

him. --are we free or not? You sound to me not to be free in

your mind. Sorry, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I told you

that I had a reaction.

Hi Stan,

I'm glad you said what you did we should be free to asked what ever question we want .

Call your surgeon and ask him > Al. Don't ask us! Of course we can ask any question we wish. Perhaps it would have made more sense and been more to the point to tell the poster to ALSO ask his doctor. This would have been a fair response to what certainly sounds as if it might be a serious problem that deserves a lot more than answers from a web site. I, for one, am leery about responding in any other way to posts that hint at a serious medical issue. If I give advice on such a matter I am afraid that someone will take it! > > > I have a negative reaction to your comment
