Hi,

Bone decompression (drillling holes in the bone to allow it to heal)

is supposed to be quite successful treatment for avn. I cant imagine

that it would interfer with your running if the outcome is a success

as you keep all your own parts. Sounds like the best option for you

at the moment as your OS suggests, and I quess you want this

treatment asap before the joint is damaged futher. Do they know what

caused the avn? Good luck,

Leigh

Hi

In stage 1 or early stage 2 a core or bone decompression may work.

If done later the long term success rate is not very good. Also you

will or should be none weight bearing for at least 6 weeks to heal.

Running again is never a really good idea after hip surgery.

hi, I have just been diagnose with avn first stage. according to the doctor's first opinion the best option in my case is bone decompression. I'm 50 years old, a triathlete and runner. Any experiences with bone decompression and return to running. Would hip resurfacing be more effective. I am waiting for appointments for other opinions. Any body has heard of Dr. Philippon? I am in the Miami area and would appreciate some feedback. Thank you very much. Olga

Dear Olga,

I think it depends on how much cartilage you have left which if you have avn, (at least for me this was true) there was nothing left to work with. But I’m not 100% sure of that. This is just what I was told when I was making a decision. I am in the Miami area and used Dr. Jeffery Rich. He is a young dr. in the Kendall area. I think he is very good. His office staff are very professional and my experience with them was A+++. One thing is for sure, if you get a THR, running and high impact sports will lessen the time before a revision and for me, I am going to work my hardest to keep that from happening for a long long time. My aunt loved her sports and she has had 3 hip operations. Isn’t it great to live in the land of the free......

Olga

With AVN the bone dies and the cartilage stays in good shape until

the joint becomes rough and wears away at the cartilage. So you can

have great cartilage with AVN in the early stages. That is when a

resurfacing is best. Sometimes only the ball is replaced and not the

cup.

The internet has lots of info on AVN. Happy surfing.

You would be referring to hemi-resurfacing which is just the

replacement of the femoral ball. " Full " resurfacing (which is

commonly just called " resurfacing " ) replaces the femoral ball and the

acetabular socket.
