Dear Phyllis,

How do you mean " how to get my foot up the leg " ? Can you explain in

more detail? Thanks, Eleanor

Socks and shoes after THR

Mark,

I am 6 1/2 weeks out from my thr and only for the last few days have I

been able to put on my socks. I still need someone to tie my shoes.

It will be a while longer for that but each day I get closer. My OS

said not to push anything before the 8 weeks of healing is over. I

think most people eventually put on their own sock and shoes. My OS

said he never takes anyone off precausions.........he said they are

for life. You will learn new ways of getting stuff done. He sat and

showed me how to get my foot up the leg to whare I can put on shoes

when the 8 weeks are over. He did a good job so I'm listening to him

and not pushing it beyound what feels fine at this time. Good luck!

Hi Phyllis,

I think that is the key. Find new ways to do old things

keeping the precautions in mind.

If you can't do it within the precautions consider how

important it is. If it is not that important maybe give it

a miss.

If it is very important to you and your lifestyle - take a

risk.

That is how I am doing things at the moment. I actually

found that I am doing more this time, and with more safety

than last time. And that is because of this group.

The one key for me was not taking your hip over 90 and

twisting in at the same time. I relooked at everything I

had been doing and found that some of the things I thought

I was doing safely were extreemly unsafe.

In the end we had this huge operation to have a life - lets

live it

Dear Phyllis,

The precautions are really tough but it sounds as though you're

doing well at 6 1/2 weeks. Have you thought about buying slip on

shoes? I wore a pair of slip on Aerosole sneakers for months and

they were a godsend. I didn't even have to use a long handled shoe

horn to get into them.

Eventually, you'll be tying your shoes without even thinking about

it. Good luck with everything :-)

Margaret,

Can you give us some examples of unsafe practice? When I was in

hospital (a specialist orthopaedic hospital which gets the most

difficult cases) there were quite a few people in because of

dislocations, so my worry level has zoomed since I now have a THR

instead of my resurfacing which almost never dislocates. I agree, I

think one has to be very careful.

But I still find it difficult to know when I cross the mid-line or even

when I exceed 90 degrees. I feel it is stupid of me, but I guess I

react to 'doing this' isn't good, 'this is ok' for specific actions

better.

I was told turning my foot and knee inwards is 'no' when I am trying to

put on my sock--which I was doing all the time, so that is helpful.

I am wondering how I will garden as it is now warming up here. I

usually get down on my hands and knees and dig, and bend. Practical

ideas welcome.

Sure Eleanor,

The most obvious one is putting my footwear on,

I used to twist my knee in and lift my leg. Then I would

twist my body to put my socks, shoes, etc on.

Now I sit on a chair, and put my ankle on my knee to do it.

I am told this is much safer and it is less painful.

Getting in the car was always difficult with my low car.

I used to sit on the seat then swing my legs in. It never

did become comfortable that way. Now I reverse up to the

car, stick my foot in and slide it til it is straight and

sit down. It sounds akward, but is a smooth fluid movement

that people don't notice and my husband realised recently

that it is the way he does it.

At the moment I can't think of the other things. But those

are two things that are so much easier for me now.

Aussie Margaret.

Hi

I found that shoes with velcro fastener were great. At

first I wondered if velcor would actually hold tight

as shoe fastener . I found that the fastener never

ever let go unless I pulled it off. Until I could

reach my shoe I discovered that my reacher did the job

of folding the velcor onto itself and also releasing

it. If you don't have a reacher maybe you could use

pliers or ice tongs to enable that reach. I also used

moccasins.

Another alternative if elastic shoe strings. I didn't

use them myself because I had no need for them. I

know that they work and I didn't notice a big

difference in their appearance compared to regular

shoe strings.

At about 12 weeks I could reach my foot by putting it

on my opposite knee. My New Balance gray shoes with

velcro fasteners are still my favorite shoes every

day.

My hip replacement was Oct 4, 2004. Before the

operation I was educated to believe that the rehab was

equally important to the surgery itself and to take PT

very seriously. I did and I am so glad I did. Now I

walk with limp and only occasional muscle pain.

I thank you all for you support. I joined this group

several months before surgery. I was so scared I

could only read what the rest of you were sharing.

When the pain became so great I got through my scare

and I am sure glad I did. I have my life back.

Friends say, " You are smiling now!!! "

My best wishes to you all. LOVE RUTH age 76

Hi Eleanor,

This morning I remembered another thing.

I used to wipe myself after the toilet by bending over and

putting my hand behind me. (The reality is I would end up

putting both knees together and feet each side of the bowl

and then bend.)

Now I have a friend who dislocated his hip twice while

cleaning up after the toilet.

Now I do something totally different.

I stand before I wipe. That way I might twist, but I don't

twist and have my angle over 90.

Aussie Margaret.

Dear Margaret and Phyllis,

Thanks so much for such detailed good descriptive advice. All most helpful. Love this

last one, Margaret! These things are

important.

Two more tips that have helped me:

1. Elastic shoelaces so I can slide in the shoes easily.

2. A device made by BeOK! which allows you to put the sock on the

device and use two attached handles on cords to pull the socks all

the way on. Works great!

Hope these tips help!
