Guest guest
Hi Bob I had both hips replaced in 2001. The left one in 1/01 and the right in 7/01. My doctor would not do them both at the same time because of the blood clot problem. Sally

Guest guest
Has anyone had leg length descrepency from THR? This is something a person needs to discuss with the surgeon before the operation. I was blessed in that mine had knowledge of it beforehand, because I did not! I woke to find my legs the same length and it was glorious! I commended him, and he grinned. "Yeah," he said, "I knew about that, all right!" Guest guest
I have researched & verified what you say, about introducing lesser size lift then measured so that you foot, spine adjusts gradually >>> I know of it from experience with the matter. I had nearly a full 3 inch difference in my legs prior to THR. I wore a shoe build for approximately 5~6 yrs. before hand..... and was advised to make the decision wisely about builds.... once you've gone you don't want to go back. Your body adjusts to it's height differences is the reason why.... so you don't want to go from screwed up limpy walk to almost normal and right back where you started... I was told that's worse on your body then just leaving yourself to limp. Any hoots... I choose to use the builds in hopes of helping my back pain. And mind you it did just that.... took ALOT of the pressure and "benched" feelings outta my lower spine. For me doc said would be best to step up the build gradually for my comfort but also so my body didn't snap around and create injuries in the process of trying to adjust. I felt most comfortable wearing a build that was shy of my "actual" LD... I kinda felt my back would adjust as it had to the shoe build wearing when I had my leg lengthened during the operation. Maybe it was just too much adjusting... because I did let him push limits with lengthening but it's not been the biggest problem. Although I did suffer with some SEVER muscle spasms throughout my entire leg for about 9~10 months over it.... my back is now what bothers me most about it all.... and nearly 3 yrs. into it... I think if it was gonna adjust... it would've by now course I could be wrong about that deal. I choose having the builds added to my shoes merely because I didn't want the fuss of it shifting around in my shoe or worse having to do the quick jump & run deal and the pair of shoes I grabbed not having the build in it. Adding builds is a lil more costly... but I think the benefits out weigh the draw backs.... The two hugest down sides to it is... you'll never sale that pair in a yard sale down the line LOL and you don't just "go get a pair of shoes"! Depending upon your area and how many prostetic facilities are available doing the work.... it can be a long wait. I always bought shoes when I had extra cash and kept them stocked. Learned that when I was in a dress wearing tennis shoes at a funeral. Those "short notice" issues aren't pleasant. At the average cost being $225 for tennis shoes and upward $750 for a pair of boots... it wasn't one of those~ I'll get that today deals for me & my budget making $10 hr. I started to have pain big time since I have been walking lopsided!!! >>> Yup.... limp adds ALOT of pressure to the spine... which probably wouldn't be so bad if it were constant... it's the snappy, jerky, back & forth every step deal that creates the benches OH LORD~ WHAT WAS THAT feelings while you walk. It throws your gait off, everything from your neck down is ultimately effected.... bone wise~ clean down to the way your foot will actually process & carry through a step. It's suppose to be heel to toe when walking.... limpers tend to want to toe toe... which also creates problems all to it's own. I was not like this before surgery!!! How long post op before EVERYTHING is settled? Hip & legs.....? >>> Alot of people fail to research well enough PRIOR TO surgery to know all the complications and take THR lightly. Although it's came a very long way from ways of way back when, it's still a very real life changing surgery. Actually leg lengthing during THR is one of the more common problems.... it only ranks with 6% chance during primary replacement but increases in risk to 7.5% for revisions. It's actually only frequanted more by the post operative problems of Cardiovascular complications, including deep vein thrombosis risk up to 56% Urinary up to 35% Trochanteric problems 9.5% for trochanteric non-union and 17% for trochanteric bursitis Ectopic ossification 7% for primary replacements and 15% for revision replacements As to how long post op for everything to settle.... I can't say that I know that answer. I believe it to be a case by case issue.... I know for me~ mines still an issue. Hope how soon your feeling better and things work out for ya. Guest guest
IF (other)doc's can agree exactly what I need..No cooperation from OS! >>> I was once told... a squeeky wheel will eventually get oiled~ I suppose so it don't drive you plum nuts. LOL I'd call and call and call again. Trust me don't get ugly.... doctors office staff can put you off just the same as the specialist. But I would squeek til someone bothered with the oiling. Guest guest
My OS doesn't offer any remendy.. I have been my own advocate. >>> What is your actual diagnosis ? I always say seek a second opunion~ just because I do believe 2 minds are better then one on any issue. But if both didn't recommend THR then I would look into exhausting other possible solutions to your pains. Have you done injections etc. ? I do believe specialists (*well most) are titled such because they know a candidate when they see one. Maybe THR isn't a solution for you that's why they've not actually mentioned it. Any considering THR ask, ask, & ask, again & do research. >>> I vote RESEARCH, ask.... research / ask, research / ask, research / ask. Asking will get you answers but depending upon exactly where your getting the information FROM.... it does not mean that you'll actually get accurate NOR "best for you" advise. Details of ones case history plays a HUGE role in a patients treatments... and THR is just that.... a form of treatment for a troubled hip. That doesn't mean that everyone is qualified a candidate nor that it will be successful when it's done. Know what your getting yourself into.... but LISTEN TO THE SPECIALISTS! Guest guest
Sharon It is only 3 months! It takes at least that long to heal from surgery. Then your pain should get better. You will have new muscle pain as you use your leg in ways you could not before the surgery. I still feel " pain " after overdoing it. But who doesn't? My hips are 8 and a little over a year old. Have patience and unless you get sudden, worse pain, don't worry. Guest guest
I'm a newbie...... I'm a married mother of 6. I started to have severe right hip pain almost 6 years ago. It was March of 2006 that an MRI revealed labrum tears in boths hips. A hip arthroscopy in June 2006 revealed severe bone-on-bone arthritis. FINALLY, I was looked at as a woman really in pain and not as drug addict. I have my THR on March 21st. I just turned 50. I have missed out on the last 6 years of my kids swimming meets, concerts, soccer games, on and on...............I can never get those back. I couldn't even fly over to my daughter's to go with her to pick out her wedding dress(she's getting married May '07). I'm here because I'm scared to death and I've been reading what to expect. Guest guest
Hi Debi, I know it's cold hear in the PA area, but not as cold as where you live! I had a RTHR in 1993 when I was 44. I was really anxious about my surgery also. My surgery went well and was a great success. You will feel so much better after the surgery. Don't get me wrong, there is pain from the surgery. Each day you'll feel a little better. You have time to get your upper body in shape. Debbie near Philly > > I'm a newbie...... > > I'm a married mother of 6. Guest guest
don't be scared debi, I had a hip replacement dec 12, okay it was only one, but I am completely out of pain 8 weeks later and I'm working my dog again. I've been out walking in the snow since week 3 so its all good, or it certainly has been for me. I know others haven't had it as easy, but it can't be as bad as we all have it before the op. I haven't had a nights sleep in 5 years because of the pain - now I'm getting 7 hours minimum a night with minimum discomfort, usually only because I've overdone it. its a good group here ann THR I'm a newbie......I'm a married mother of 6. Guest guest
Hi Debbie I too am near Phila, and I just had my left hip replaced on Jan 30 at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, i am 61 years old and have been putting up with this pain for about 5 years. Although I am not to the point where I can say I am better than before the surgery I am approaching it quickly, I am getting better every day and constantly improving. Good luck on your surgery Ed PS I look at my Goldwing motorcycle every day and know that it wont be too long and I will be back on it soon Re: THR Hi Debi, I know it's cold hear in the PA area, but not as cold as where you live! Guest guest
Hello, Debi F. I was most apprehensive about my surgery, too. In fact, I knew I had to have surgery about 2 years before I did! I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions--that's a key. Ask a lot of questions. I was a bit scared because I had never had general anesthesia for anything (I'm 58), nor had I ever stayed in the hospital. If your hospital offers a hip replacement/knee replacement class, take it. You'll have a lot of questions answered. I found the class that my hospital offered VERY enlightening. --Arthur --- quilting_queen_57 <quilting_queen_57@...> wrote: > I'm a newbie...... > > I'm a married mother of 6.
