Two weeks ago, I left out of Albany NY. Was so concerned about my hip,

forgot to take off my steel shank shoes...the hip did not set off the

beeper...the shoes did. I have a ceramic/ceramic/non cemented hip.

On the way home- from Orlando, I remebered the shoes...I am not sure if

it was my bra or my hip, but they " wanded " me, patted me down, and I was

thru in less than 5 minutes...

Some airports have it set more sensitivly than others...(Fla if a key

entry point and potential problem spot, therefore their security is a

little higher...

Did not bother with the card. Did bring my cane. ( IT got me preboarding

rights, plus a shorter line for security checkin...so was worth carrying.

(Also made standing around easier for my not yet operated other hip)

Where did you fly from? I set off the detectors and have to take the

shoes off even if I tell them I have replacements. They hand wanded

me and asked me to get into positions not recomended for THR. I have

both hips and shoulders replaced, so I may have enough metal to set

things off.

Hi there!! Airports do vary, and I've been wanded many times. The card doesn't help much. If the bell rings, security has to pat you down. But it doesn't take long. I find that wearing canvas slip on shoes means that at least I don't have to remeove my shoes going through the line. Putting them back on is more of a nusiance than being patted down!! I must have gotten " lucky " in Puerto Rico. Fort Lauderdale was the

real pain. I think we were Delta. I don't remember. All I know is

a few years back I did not set off anything out of burg, PA or

Atlanta. Maybe they will set the things lower now that they have

relaxed the sharp object rules. We can only hope.

I was wondering if my knee will set off any alarms when I go through

security on my way to Vegas? I do have a card saying I have a new

knee. Also, with the more sensive security, will the titanium and

screws and wires in my jaw make the buzzers and whistles go off?? How

do I explain that one?? Lynn

Oh yeah,

The alarms will go off big time. Just let them know in advance, but

they will take you aside & spend more time screaning you through...They

also search my bags,,,which put an end to my drug smuggling days.

Just show them your scars. You can also get a card from your dr.

saying you had knee replacement surgery.

The metal in your knees & elsewhere might trigger the alarms. I have

hips and in the years since I had them done, I estimate that I set

off

95% of metal detectors. A card from your doctor means nothing; might

as well leave it in your pocket. Best thing to do is tell them that

you have knees or hips or whatever right before you walk through.

The

pull-aside check only takes a moment and you're on your way.

Last week I flew to UK & back and I didn't trigger the detector at

Heathrow! So - unless they have installed some super special

detector

that somehow makes a distinction between a harmless old lady with

metal

hips and a terrorist packing a .38 and ammo, I have a feeling they

were

asleep at the switch!

I carry a form letter from the hospital that performed the surgery, attesting to my bi-lateral hip replacement. This has served me in a number of airports in Europe and elsewhere, including banks in South America that have metal detectors to protect against bank robberies.

Get a letter like this, either from your surgeon or from the hospital, and carry around several copies with you. Sometimes the security people want to keep a copy.

You will "ring the bell"... big time!

At the Mpls. airport they accept a note and showing your scars, no problem unless it has changed within the last month. I think it varies

from airport to ariport.

My doctor told me that the shape of the Total hip I have looks just like a

hand gun in the screening process.

My advice, gained through really scaring myself and security once, is the

following.

Mention you have an artificial hip. I have a picture in my passport - saves

language problems.

Get the picture or letter out BEFORE you approach the screening area.

Once you have set the alarm off KEEP YOUR HANDS VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES and

move quietly over to the person with the hand held wand.

Allow for the fact that you are going to take extra time to get through. So

make sure you go first with your group, not last, and that you have plenty

of time to catch that plane.

Happy travelling.

The letter or card is of little use anymore particularly in light of the recent

terrorist scares. If

you think about it anyone could forge or obtain such a letter or card.

On recent trips in europe I just told them " I have metal hips and the bells will

ring " - they just

wand you down a little more than others, maybe make you remove your shoes but it

is no big

deal, you soon get used to it.

The most recent metal detector " gates " will tell the security people where

the metal is... They have a diagram of a human body on a screen, and show

where the foreign object is located in/on the body. I went to court a week

or so ago, and they compared the letter to the picture they got from the

machine before they let me pass... No strip search, no removing shoes... The

machine confirmed the hospital letter. I guess it all depends on how good

(and how expensive) the security equipment is... And how intelligent the

security personnel are (no problems personally, but I have heard stories...)

I have two artificial knees. I have flown from Dallas to Boston, Philadelphia and Fort Myers FL this summer. Set off the alarm all six times I went thru. I have a card from my doc and have worn shorts so they can see my scars. I tell them I'm going to set it off and why. They don't care about my card at all. I am pulled aside for a wanding all over and a touch search where ever the wand goes off (bra hooks, snap on shorts, etc.) It only takes a few extra minutes - I am female so sometimes we have to wait for a female TSA. I haven't been longer than 10 minutes and they have never even looked in my purse, carry on , etc.

Hi, everyone--I just flew to NYC & back on Spirit Airlines. I

have a RTKR, & the card from the OS was in my purse when it was

stolen in August. But I did warn the Security guard.

Both times I was pulled aside, wanded & patted down. It did

take 5 min. or so, but the guards were quite polite.

My daughter said I must fit the profile...what profile? The one

for checking out an old lady in non-sectarian clothes, to prove

that the TSA isn't being prejudiced against Middle

Eastern-looking folks!

Hi Barb,

Sorry about your purse being stolen!...But the 'card' really isn't

much use...We'll still be pulled aside and wanded(derned metal

detectors)...But you did right to warn them in advance...I have

always been treated with respect by the guards, even though

my 'profile' as a 50 Y/O male with hair down to his waist makes me

out to be a drug smuggler & not a terrorist...But I've never been

delayed for more than 5 or 10 minutes(5 minutes for the wanding &

another 5 while they search through my carry-on bags)...I kinda enjoy

the patting down process...

Bob

P.S...I lived in Mount Clemens for a while back in 1990, so it was

nice to see a Macomb County signature...
