Well, I let my left shoulder become " frozen " . The TSR took away the

pain, but did not give me back full range of motion. Was in PT 9

months. During that time I also did the PT for the right shoulder

and when that was replaced it was a breeze. For the first TSR I was

in the hospital 2 nights, had a drain, an immobilizer and could not

use the arm. For the second TSR I was in overnight, had no drain and

just a sling. I had full use in about two weeks. Took 3 months for

all the muscle to heal.

I went almost 10 years before I got the TSR. Try PT first to loosen

up the muscle and tendions. Make sure it is just the bone before you

do any PT. Keep it moving.

The surgery was a bit easier than the hips. Still a pain to do

things either way!

What is the shoulder replacement like? Also, someone mentioned they had an

ankle replaced and I was told my ankles are too damaged for that, so I wear

braces. I have both hips and knees replaced, have had RA for 28 years,am now

48. I still work full time (pscyhologist) and recently fathered a two year

old!!! I also have a ten year old. Life goes on!

Congrats on living a full life after replacements. I have a scar

about 8 -9 inches long towards the inside of the front of my arm. My

range of motion is normal or better. Pain is gone. Tendions were in

good shape. Weight limit of about 10 pounds overhead. I felt so

good that I tore/stretched my rotator cuff. Now the replacement is

riding high. I can not lift more than about 3 pounds straight out

and up. Holding my elbows in, I can lift more.

The surgery gets rid of the bone pain. I get muscle pain when I

overdo. Range of motion does not improve much over what you already

have. So get as much range of motion before surgery. They last

about 10 years before the stem loosens. It is poly/metal cemented

like my hips. I am now 47 and awaiting the revision of my right hip

Monday.

Don't get me wrong. I have days when I question why I am alive (or continue

to live). But I try to focus on what I can do and not become my disease. Ten

years ago I developed severe asthma,so I am fortunate to have a job that

does not require physical work.The ten pound limit, does that go away when

the shoulder heals?

I have full range of motion now and the pain is not bad. Good luck on the

It all depends on how you lift things. Lifting with your arms

straight up and in front of you is not good. Lifting from the

forearm is better. Clear as mud? Push ups are also a no no.

Anthing that puts too much strain on the shoulder. I have lifted 40

lb bags of dog food, but keep close to the body. I won't be toasting

anyone with a 10 pound wine glass! LOL

My hip will be a revision and they will use the same scar, only

smaller.

I get it, I can't do a pushup now, but I can lift my daughter or a bag of

dog food (not comparing them), only if I do it in a modified way. You should

see me get up off the ground!!!!!!

Getting up off the ground is where the dog comes in handy. I have to

Lab mixes and they let me push up on them.

Good luck and I admire your zest for life. At least you can write

that way even if you don't always feel zesty! What humans can endure.
