Juris: I have had several patients with infections in their

prosthetic joint. Each time the old prosthesis has been removed,

and IV antibiotics in the hospital for 6-8 weeks. Sometimes the

doctor puts in a temporary prosthesis that is soft, and filled with

beads of antibiotics. This usually stays in place for the time that

the IV antibiotics are being given, then removed, and a new

prosthesis placed in the same hole. I have not had a patient

without a prosthesis for that long, one year, and then replaced. I

have had a patient with no hip joint, and that patient was able to

ambulate for short distances using a walker. The scar tissue forms

an artificial joint. I would get a second opinion from another

doctor.

I have a problem, getting a bit worried. I have had four THR, now

the last one has come unstuck after five years, also a bit of

infection trace in the blood - been on amoxillin last 5 yrs. Having

increasing pain lately, my prof suggests takin out replacement parts

and closing up. I wonder how you wonder around without a hip joint.

He said someone been like this for 20 yrs. He said after a year and

no trace of infection, they would put the steel parts back again.

Has anybody had experience like this, or some advise ?

I am listening, two months to go to the op.

Thanks Juris

Hallo,

My problem is partly over, six weeks ago I had complete THR removed

also infection. A lot of trouble with Antibiotics , first IV for 4

weeks now on tablets. I am moving on crutches, attending pool and

will be on crutches for another 2 months. The op lasted 5 hours + 5

hrs recovery, 15 days in hospital, up on the second day. Getting

the feel of the leg and putting pressure on, only about 30kg. have

to wait or the bone to recover. So far so good. I will keep you

posted.
