Hi Folks,

Kathy, I had a TRHR on April 6 and I got a non-cemented femoral

component--porous metal suface. I am on cruthches for the six weeks

following with only touch bearing weight on the right leg. I will use

canes after that for another 6 or so and then I will work at trying to

eliminate my limp. I am 59 and a little bit fearful of jeopardizing

this new hip. I'd love not to require revision surgery for a long time.

Cheers

Thanks, I agree I am very careful as to not jeopardize

my new hip. I kept getting the feeling I was a

minority in having to be on crutches forthe 6 weeks.

Thanks good to know I am not alone. How is your

recovery going?

Hi Kathy

I had LTHR uncemented on17.1.04. I too was on 2 crutches for 6 weeks

to allow everything to heal. After that I had 1 crutch for a couple

of weeks and then progressed to a stick. I gradually weaned myself

off the stick in the house and last week (week 13) when I returned

to work, I didn't use it at all, even for the walk to school -

although that is only a few hundred yards. I took my stick in the

car when I went shopping at the weekend, but didn't need to use it.

Tomorrow we are going on a walking visit with the children and I

will take it then just in case my leg gets tired. I am finding that

I sometimes get a pain a few inches above my knee when I walk

without my stick ( although I didn't get that at all at the weekend,

so maybe it's an allergy to going back to work!!)so I will need the

extra support on a long walk. I am finding that as my muscles get

stronger, my limp is disappearing - I don't have a difference in leg

length, so for me the limp is all about strength. My physio has

given me lots of exercises to work all of the muscles groups and it

is certainly making a difference. I couldn't do an awful lot for the

first 6 week, but since then the improvement has been really good.

Don't dispair - you certainly aren't the only one to need crutches

for 6 weeks!!

Happy recovery

Lesley

Weight-bearing and crutch-using instructions vary from case to case.

Variables include type of fixation and other surgical events (e.g.

did the surgeon break something while he was in there?. But even

when those are considered, individual surgeons will hand out slightly

different prescriptions.

I have hybrid-fixation m/p and was weight-bearing as tolerated from

day 1. I used a walker and crutches interchangeably for about 6

weeks, down to one crutch by 6 weeks for one hip, four weeks for the

other.

I did some reading and had a conversation with my Doctor about this

subject. This is my understanding for what it's worth.

A lot of different factors come into play when it comes to how long

you need to be on crutches and how much weight you can put on your

new hip. Different doctors have different thinking on the subject.

The going trend seems to be to leave it up to the patient as to what

he/she feels they can tolerate. (I am 55 and was full weight bearing

on an un-cemented prosthesis the same day as my surgery.)

However, the more important factors have to do with your age, bone

density, blood make up and how your surgery went. He may have had to

do something a little different on your surgery that is " out of the

norm " . Your doctor may let one patient walk out of the hospital

without even a cane, and ask you to take 6 weeks on crutches.

You might ask him what his reasoning is about being so conservative.

At any rate, six weeks will go by fast! Take it easy and enjoy your

spring.

,

Thanks for the info. Muscle tone is his reason. He has

to cut through alot of muscle to get to the bone, he

feels that if your turn the wrong way and are

depending on a muscle that is no longer there you

could fall. The PT says that it is important to use

the crutches so that you do not develop a permanent

limp. As you said everyone has an opinion and

different ways for doing things. Thanks

I'm 51 and had a non-cemented Left hip replacement and was given the same

restrictions that you were.

Kathy,

I had THR right hip 29 mos ago at age 50. I was on a

walker 12 days, got my staples out on the 12th day

also, did not use a cane or crutches. My joint

replacement is also metal (titanium). Good luck on

your recovery.

Hi Kathy, it's another (36, LTHR 4/01). I used a walker for 2

days in the hospital, but then progressed directly to a cane. I was

full weight bearing from day 1 with a press fit prosthesis. I am now

3 1/2 weeks post-op and find that I don't even need the cane

anymore. I don't use it around the house and mostly just take it

when I go out for security. I can do just about everything I was

doing around my house before my surgery, I have even figured a way to

bend my operated leg back so that the heel almost touches my back to

put on my own sock and shoe. :-) My pt took me walking outside

without the cane at 3 weeks and told me to start concentrating on

evening out my gait to get rid of the limp. Anyway, I know it's

different for everyone, so just take your time and keep a positive

outlook. I haven't had much pain and don't need to take even tylenol

now (hurray, I have been on pain medication since I was a

teenager!). Good luck! Oh, and I wanted to ask you if your dr

really " cut " the muscles, my dr said they only pushed mine aside and

that they don't like to cut them. Keep in touch. - :-)
