Guest guest
Hi Dennis I think at your age you should investigate hip resurfacing. I know of quite a few big guys like you who have had this done. Resurfacing is a bone conserving hip replacement designed for younger more active people. The idea being that when we have a thr it will eventually fail and then we have another (revision), if you have resurfacing then when it does eventually fail having a thr will be like having one for the first time as little bone was lost initially.... the younger you are the more revisions you will need, resurfacing gives an extra go. Also resurfacing gives a more natural joint so no stress shielding, see this x-ray for the difference in procedures http://www.smj.org.uk/0205/metal%20fig1.htm One thing with resurfacing is you must talk to a Dr who is experienced in resurfacing, in US many Dr quote out dated and incorrect information. I can give you a number of Dr's who will give you a free consultation if you send copies of your x-rays, all without obligation. This will cost you nothing yet could change your life. If you join this group (surface hippy) you will get great advice surfacehippy I was 37 when I had both my hips resurfaced and I have never looked back, once you have more mobility and less pain it is so much easier to loose weight. Many Dr's will tell you that resurfacing isn't possible with AVN, this simply isn't true and there are some great DR " s who specialize in avn, Best Wishes and I will answer any questions you may have (BUT join surface hippy.) jane in Wales UK > > Hello all...i have just joined the group to learn all > that i can about hip replacement..i'm 51 6' and weigh > 316 lbs. the docs said that i need to lose down to at > least 250 lbs..i'm working on it but only losing about > 8 lbs a month..anyway i was wondering if there are any > more large people out there that have had a total hip > replacement. > i gained weight after a liver transplant 11 years ago > and it seems that my avn is from the prednisone i was > taking..anyway any big folks been successful out > there? > > dennis > > __________________________________________________ >

Guest guest
Dennis, I would also suggest looking into resurfacing. Jane recommended it to me about 8 months ago, and at 3 weeks post-op I'm very happy with the results. It can be quite successful in cases of AVN, and is a conservative option for younger patients. For weight loss I suggest water exercise. It is a great work out and because it is non-weight bearing it is easy on the bad hip. If you attend a class faithfully you will loose pounds and gain muscle tone. Talk to your liver specialist about a weight loss plan that would be right and safe for you. Mine recommended the low GI diet. Best of Luck. -Barb
Guest guest
Hi Dennis. Welcome to this group My dr didn't care if I lost weight I was about 225 and I had my Hip replace I hate to say is but it didn't work out liked I wanted its been six years and I'm still walking with a cane but I also had my knee replace both on the right side I need my left knee done but won't do it . All I can say is how old you are and how bad your Hip is .That had to be hard to have a liver transplant . Talk to these people in this group I never had anyone to talked to before my hip operation I didn't know anything and my dr didn't tell me too much . Well I think it would be good to see more then one dr .Well you take care and have a nice day.
