Worried About My Mother

Hello. I'm sorry I don't really know how to use this particular

message board. An email came through and I responded with this

question, but I don't know where it went! I thought it would go

directly to the boards, but I guess it doesn't work that way. Anyway,

this is the letter that I wrote to that person.

I am extremely concerned about my mother, who is facing hip

replacement surgery. She is 80, and aside from the excruciating pain

that she is in (and has been in for the past couple of years) she is

in wonderful shape. Up until the pain became too unbearable, she was

an enthusiastic walker -- 6-10 miles a week, sometimes 3 miles a day.

Walking gives

her more joy than I can even voice. The hip that is to be replaced

bears no resemblence to her " normal " hip. She has fallen on it three

times on concrete, each fall bringing worse consequences. She is

terrified of falling again. Also, the cartlidge is gone from her hip

bones, and the hip bones are rubbing bone to bone. This is

heartbreaking and I want to know that she will be okay and that the

surgery will be a " godsend " for her. I think she is a good candidate

for surgery(?)

The letters on this message board are the first time I've heard about

legs being shorter after surgery. Is this something that she needs to

ask her doctor about?

Any advice is welcome. I love her so much.

Diane
