Guest guest
jlyourman: It sounds like you have waited quite a while and with intense pain to have your THR. You will be so much happier once this is done! I can certainly relate to your pain and being unable to do simple things like take socks/shoes off and walk without hurting! I am no longer in pain and it feels WONDERFUL! Still on the healing end from my most current THR (had to have both hips done), but able to walk/sit/stand/sleep without pain. I marvel at being normal (well CLOSE anyway)! I am no longer spending my life drugged and in bed! I'll be thinking of you on August 10, wishing you well in surgery and recovery. You've been in pain long enough. Hopefully, though, your Evel Kneivel days are over Newbie with THR scheduled for August 10 Glad to see I found the group. I am a 40y/o male going to have my right hip replaced on August 10. I must say I'm looking forward to the time afterwards. As I told Dr. I can't remember not having some type of pain. My mind and body just accepted it. Everyone says 40y/o and total hip! Yes, it's my only option besides doing nothing. Way back in 1976 I wanted to be Evil Kenievil and we had a lot of crashes in common. I bruised my right femur and ended up with osteomyelitis that spread into my hip and destoyed the plate and hip. So my right leg is 1/2 inch shorter than the left and I have little movement. The ball in my hip is only sitting 1/2 in the socket and is all calcified. I looked at the THR option 15 years ago and they said keep going as long as you can. I am very active at work, hunting , hiking, backpacking, etc. Some folks ask how do I do it, I just put one foot in front of the other and keep going and live with the pain.In the last 5 years it has gotten worse and I can't do simple things like put a sock on or tie a shoe lace on my right foot. When I go backpacking or hiking with my Boy Scout troop after the first 1/4 mile is a matter of will power to keep going. When we stop, I will have to have my son take my boot and sock of my right foot because I can't move my right leg. Besides the pain, my right thigh is 3" in diameter smaller than my left with no muscle tone. With all the favoring of my hip, walking with a limp, I have ruptured 2 disks in my lower back. Here is the strange thing, I have had pain in my hip for so long my back only feels like a dull ache at times. (Usually after I do the stupid things like backpack and hike). My kids are not getting younger and I don't like coming home from work each day and laying on the couch because my hip hurts.
Guest guest
Glad to see I found the group. I am a 40y/o male going to have my right hip replaced on August 10.>>> Welcome to the boards jlyourman. Congrats on the operation date... that's just around the corner. Hopefully it won't be long and you'll be up & about better then your body has ever known.... I certainly wish you well with it all. As for me I'm a 35 yr. old wife & mother of two. I had my initial ceramic on ceramic replacement done June 2003 and have since had 2 revisions last being Jan 2005 due to some complications with my socket. I also had my leg difference corrected during my THR which was nearly 3"... that has created some back problems for me~ but all in all I have no regrets looking back. I can say that my hip at least feels better then it once did so all is not lost. Everyone says 40y/o and total hip! Yes, it's my only option besides doing nothing. >>> I know I get that alot too~ there are younger then me though and hey... you got 7 more yrs then I did before having to have it done. LOL THR isn't what it once was... and technology has came a VERY LONG way with the procedure. Younger patients are in the mix more because of the advances in implant life. My kids are not getting younger and I don't like coming home from work each day and laying on the couch because my hip hurts. >>> Exactly~ but it's more then just the kids. Boils down to your quality of life and just how you want to spend it. You have to make a well informed decision based on YOUR NEEDS because no one else will live with the out come. I wish you well and should you have any specific questions... just ask~ I'm sure that someone on the board can help or point out where you can find what your seeking information on~ These are some pretty handy lil guide sites which addresses most Q & A about THR & the actual procedure information. Guest guest
---Hi there, Before you go through with a total hip replacement please check out another option that is for all ages really but especially for the younger, more active person. It is called resurfacing, and I had it done 8 weeks ago and am delighted so far with the results. I had been in pain and unable to walk any distance for the last 5 years and had to use a cane the last two years. No pain meds touched it. Today I went to the Y and did water exercises for an hour, then swam for 15 minutes, then I came home and had breakfast and then walked 1.6 miles. I feel wonderful. Go to surfacehippy/messages and read the testimonials, the links to all the resurfacing surgeons web sites and lots more information. You may have to register but that only takes a couple minutes. I shudder to think of a young person getting a total hip replacement when there is something that can keep them so much more active. Best wishes to you no matter what you decide to do, but I'm crossing my fingers that you will at least check it out. ...... Guest guest
JL I was 40 when I had my first hip replaced. Went with the " old fashioned " cemented metal stem with a screwed poly liner. I am now 48 and feel great. No restrictions, except the high impact. Even had the second one done in 1998 revised last year. Got a new cemented stem because the old on loosened because of an auto accident. Also have the shoulders replaced. So if you have made up your mind to get it fixed there is nothing wrong with a THR at 40! You may have a harder time because of the small muscle. Rebuilding it may be harder, but that would happen with any type of surgery. Good luck and you will be pain free soon. Sue > Glad to see I found the group. Guest guest
I am certainly no expert on selecting procedures, but I would bet that you will not be a candidate for a resurface. My understanding is that they cannot change the length of your leg hardly at all with a resurface. I would not be afraid of a THR, even at your young age. I am 51, and had a THR with plastic insert 7 weeks ago. I used to experience all the pain that you describe, but now I am pain free. Rehab was a piece of cake. Maybe the plastic will wear out, but my doctor is not worried about it. It certainly is great for now! > > Glad to see I found the group. Guest guest
I'm no expert, either, even though I'm wearing a resurface, but I believe that in many cases they can correct the leg length disparity. Onle a resurf surgeon could tell you for sure. Luckily many of them will give a free consult over by email. If you are interested how, feel free to email me personally at joefish at mtaonline dot net. > > > Glad to see I found the group. Guest guest
I had a hip replacement in Feb 14 and went to rehab and was home on the 28th. I lost so much blood I became Iron Deficient and now am doing good and going to have a knee replacement. I walked to the bathroom the next day (not advisable). I am 48 and it was my left hip.I understand the hip pain mine was just dead bone no one knows why but the pain was out of this world. I couldn't get comfortable. Today I am pain free from my hip and it's like I never had it. Amazing it was titanium and except for a little bursitis it never bothers me anymore. My knee is frozen so I still walk with a limp and a crutch after using a walker now pain free except for knee.
