Guest guest
Hello everyone..I am new to OA and my recent diagnosis. I have bone on bone deformity in my left hip and cannot even get around, more than half an hour or so. I had back surgery in 1978 and to make a long story short, one orthopaedic group thought my pain was related to my back, which it IS not. My original orthopaedist has since retired in 2003, and I had very good success with my back surgery L5-S1 fusion and discectomy/graft from iliac crest (no hardware). Anyway, I have been in so much pain for so long that I wanted the surgeons (a new one in Philadelphia) first opening and 28 December suited us as my husband has time off and can be with me. I am 50 years young (love rock music, etc.). I have been told I'd be in the hospital for 3 days. I'm no stranger to pain but I was just wondering, when is the worst part of the recuperative process generally speaking, for a total hip? I know I am getting a ceramic hip, but other than that I don't know a whole lot and I am having this done at Pennsylvania Hospital. Does anyone have any good or bad news about this place. I take Vicodin for pain right now and I can't wait to get the surgery over and done with; the whole thing has ruined the past 11 months of my life. Thanks Ilene

Personally speaking, the worst part of the hospital was the terror prior to the "know nothing " shot. When I woke up after surgery, the pain was gone. It was hard to get that leg up on the exercise mat, but still that was not as bad as walking into the hospital the morning of surgery. As a matter of fact, I had to be wheeled in because I could no longer walk. There you have pain! I wish you blessings on your surgery and great success and joy after it! hugs Marge
Guest guest
the worst part of the recovery can be different for each person. after what you have been through the pain part will not be the worst. the mental part can be tough. if your hip is not cemented you will get to the point that your pain level is so much less than before surgery and you still have to use a walker or crutches, this gives the bone time to fuse to the new parts, you need to remember that the dr. knows best. the first time that you " overdo " it can also be tough. simple things like walking through the mall use muscles that haven't been used in a long time. healing takes a little time and can spread to areas beyond the incision site Hi!! New to group; having THR 28 December..... > > > > Hello everyone..I am new to OA and my recent diagnosis. > > I have bone on bone deformity in my left hip and cannot even get > around, more than half an hour or so. > > I had back surgery in 1978 and to make a long story short, one > orthopaedic group thought my pain was related to my back, which it IS > not. Guest guest
Hi Ileene I've had both of my hips replaced (6 months apart) and the second replacement went so much smoother. I'd say the first 24 hours are the worst but the unknown comes in a strong second. Neither surgery was as bad as I though they would be and the end result is so worth it. Guest guest
Ilene: the worst part is the first 24 hours after surgery....actually the worst is waiting for the surgery. The first time you get up out of bed is the most difficult, then subsequent times up and walking get easier and easier.
