I am curious as to why you needed FOUR replacements. Problem with the prosthesis? other? <mystery@...> wrote:

I am so new here most of you don't know me. I introduced myself the other day. I am 48 and have had 4 Total hip Replacements, with three being done on same leg. In April I was hit head on by a drunk driver, who died at the scene. I got a shattered femur and the hip joint was knocked so loose it fell out in the doctors hand.

It has been a long road from bed ridden for two weeks and now. I am now allowed to walk with a cane. I was so happy when the doctor gave me the ok to drive and use a cane. This Total hip replacement was more complicated then the others as he had to use a cage to hold the socket. Does any of you have that. I sure would like to know more about it.

I go back in October and we are going to talk about redoing the right hip. It is very loose due the extra weight being put on it. But it has been in there 23 years. I dread anymore operations.

But each time I do have them I just grit my teeth and do what has to be done. I push myself harder then anyone.

Just please know if you work hard and get what has to be done done, you will recover faster and easier.

I have had to have 2 replacements in 5 years both on the left side

The second revision is still very painful and it was done 2.5 years ago

I was just told it did not heal past 6 weeks post op but to have it revised again will not help any, and could possibly cause more problems

SO I was wondering too why you have had to have 4 was it due to healing problems or something else

I didn't have good doctors on the first two. When the one did the first left TH he pumped the cement all the way to the knee. It went out in 7 years and it took me three years to find a doctor who would even redo it. He made all kinds of promises and said I was a challege. He did it and was so proud of hisself, but Iknew from almost day one it was not right. I went to see him following the operation and said soemthing is wrong. He yelled at me he fixed it and to quit complaining. I left his office and never returned. He was suppose to have used a special machine to get all the cement out. I went to still another doctor and ask him to ex-ray it and tell me what he thought. He did and came in th eroom shaking his head and said it won't hold. But to my surprise he said the cement was still there. I learnt a hard lesson with the first two doctors, they worked at small hospitals close to my home. Since then I have learnt the lesser quality doctors work at small hospitals cause they aren't qulitify to work at the bigger ones.

This third one, I saw a doctor in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I could tell from day one he would tell me the truth. I also told him what ever you do just tell me the truth, I can except the truth better then finding out I been lied to. So I went through some test an dhe decided if we could get my pain under control we might be able to wait 2 to 10 years before redoing them. I was sent to a pain specialist and he was helping me get the pain under control. Then I got hit head on by the drunk driver. The impact sent my motor in on me and shattered my left femur. I was taken to a small hospital and refused to sign for their doctors to operate. I laid in that hospital for 5 days fighting their doctor, till my doctor could get me transfered to his hospital. They treated me badly, even tho my doctor kept asking them to give me something stronger for pain. I finally got transfered by abulance to St Frances Hospital in Tulsa and there I was treated good.

My doctor had to redo his scheule and have the whole day free for my operation as he didn't know for sure if he had to redo the hip part. But when he went into check it it fell out in his hand. Since the leg was broke he was able to get all the cement out. This time I can tell it is right. He had been elling me he would have to break my leg bone to get all the cement out. Well he didn't have to the wreck took care of that.

The first doctor was also an acholic and lied from day one to me. He quit his practice and left Oklahoma two weeks after I left his office angry. I was angry he lied to me and didn't knwo about the cement. If I had of known I could of sued him as he also lengthened the wrong leg. I say live an dlearn, but I sure have learnt the hard way with doctors.

When I go back to see him in October, he wants to talk about doing the right hip. I am still under the pain specialist care and doing ok.

I have had hip trouble all my life, so am use to pain. I was born with dislocated hips and never taken back to the doctor till it was to late to do anything. If my parents had took me back I would of been put in a body cast for a few months and end of problems.

Please check your doctor out good. I walk into the first doctors office desperate and I didn't know there was such an operation.

This last time I called and ask lots of questions and did a lot of praying.

Sorry so long.

"I am curious as to why you needed FOUR replacements. Problem with the prosthesis? other?"

I think my main problem was with the first two doctors. The first one was an alcholic and lengthen the wrong leg and pumped the cement clear to the knee. He did both hips first time.

The second doctor, I just don't know why he did a bad job and lied to me.

Both was from small town hospitals.

But to be honest my bones were in bad shape.

Neither of the prosthesis failed, it was a loosening of the joints mostly. And the right one having to bear most of my weight for three months is really bad now.

But I am going to say I had more Doctor problems. This one is great and I will stick with him long as I can.

Have you had a Second Opinion as to the up-coming surgery? If not, I suggest that you do so.

Hi Abraham,

The right hip replacement has been in there 23 years and thats longer then I was told they last. I have seen so many doctors and have found one I totally trust. But I am the best judge as to whether it needs to be done or not. It is so loose and painful I know it dose need redone. But after the car wreck and trumma to my left leg, I am not ready to go through another operation right now.

So I will put it off long as I can bare the pain.

Thanks for the advice. :-)

You have a stong spirit and that is very good, with the pain you have. Every MD says to avoid surgery until you can't stand the pain any longer. You are the best judge as to whether you want the surgery. Remember, Quality of Life is important, also.

My THR was done in 1992 and it is starting to give me problems. On my good days, I am very good; on the bad days I start to think of surgery. But, having gone throught it before, I am not rushing for more post-surgery pain.

Best wishes.

Hi Abraham,

Thank you for the compliment. I try my best to look at the good side of things.

I sure know what you are talking about. It is so hard to fight the pain and know you need to have them replaced.

I have been through it 4 times and it does not get any easier.

I try to focus on the future and knowing I will feel so much more better.

So I try to think about that. I know deciding to get it done and knowing it will be better isn't much consolation, but sometimes its all we have. :-)

Good luck on your operation. Please remind me and I will be in prayer for you.
