Susie, I think it's the rooster's comb, not the chicken's. Guess those roosters have something going for them that chicks don't. :-) You guys should have a field day with one. :-) It's called hyaluronic acid, and it lubricates knee joints with deteriorated or no cartilage. It helps in the early stages of deterioration and can help delay knee repair and replacement. It's a good thing to try before you go to cortisone. It's still working for one of my brothers. I just read it was being used to plump up wrinkles. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get our surgeons to inject our faces. Double knee replacement definitely gave me a few wrinkles! We are talking about the shots called “Synvisc”,

I know the spelling is wrong but I am close, and there are others. It is a

thick liquid that they inject into a hip or knee joint to give it more

lubrication and cushioning. There are people who report great improvements but

there are just as many who get no help at all. It’s like giving your knee

an oil change or lube job. I looked into them years

ago but I am not a candidate, too much damage.

I’m in

the same boat.  I had the synvisc injections.  I too was bone on bone in my

left knee.  The doctor was fairly certain it wouldn’t work – as he was about the

abrasion arthroplasty I had done last March – but given my age (37) he wanted

to try anything and everything before he did a knee replacement.  I had my knee

replaced in November and it is wonderful.  I still can’t bend it as far as I

would like, but I’m working on it.  I can walk further, stand longer and have

no more pain in that knee.  It’s wonderful.

Re: Waiting and waiting for TKR

I did the orthovisc

shots. They have a website, orthovisc.com and

synvisc.com. They're two brands of basically the same drug.

I'm bone on bone which traditionally means you don't have a great success

rate. But my insurance covered it so the doctor tried it, mainly because I'm

only 42 and he wanted to do anything he could to postpone surgery.

The shots aren't any fun, but if they had worked for me, bought me some

time, they would have been well worth it.

Unfortunately, they didn't give me any relief at all.

Hi . Mine too was bone on bone but I was willing to try anything. And this was at a time with no insurance. My doc gave me the shots; can't remember which one. Had to travel 400 miles to get them every week but worth it. Also, my doc charged me only $100 per injection. I think they are about $500 or so each. They did get me through the summer, but I did have a lot of pain, but I was able to function around the inside and outside of my home. But during my 2 1/2 years of agony, I hardly went anywhere, even to church. There's a gal on our group who has to loose weight before her surgery; I feel so sorry for her. How can one loose weight when they can't exercise, etc? The resorts have swimming all day for $5; but it's 60 miles. That is a wonderful exercise! Lynn

I'm 43 and my doc also thought doing Synvisc was a way to postpone TKR. I got the series of injections and really had no effect positive or negative. Here I am one month post-surgery and still waiting for the good part but I'm glad it's been done. I can feel that the problem is no longer my knee joint, just pain from incision and weak muscles. I had been walking incorrectly for several years so trying to get the proper bend and straighten is difficult.

But I think I can even tell now how much better this will be in a few months. My mom's friends (in mid-60s) who had TKR kept saying how much better they felt after the surgery but now I realize they really didn't mean right away, just a few months down the road.

I hope you can have your surgery soon. Just get it over with.

It’s kind of nice to read a message

from someone with a more “realistic” outlook about the recovery. We

all want to wake up after surgery and feel 10 years younger, ready to do

everything we missed out on. Butt………that’s

not really how it works. The joint damage usually sneaks up on us over a

length of time and so does getting back to our “new” normal. Stick with

the exercise and the stretches because you’re at the point where your unconscious starts doing things. Things like getting up

and grabbing a different book or magazine and being half done before you realize

you didn’t grab your cane, or going to the fridge and coming back with

something in each hand.

After my last hip revision (last February) I remember how upset I was when I got to work ne day and thought I'd left my cane on the bus. In actuality, it hadn't left home. I was so relieved to find it as it was the one my father bought for me when I had my first hip replacement back in 1983, when I was 33 years old. Pat. Things like getting up and grabbing a different book or magazine and being half done before you realize you didn’t grab your cane, or going to the fridge and coming back with something in each hand.

Thanks for the encouragement. Actually I gave up the cane a week or so ago. I'm willing to be without it and walk holding on to something briefly and then without any support. I walk slowly and with care but I don't need anything much to help me.

Hi Donna, Thanks for letting me know about the shot called rooster's comb that would be neat if work for winkles for our face :-) Well you take care and have a nice day :-) SusieDonna Hart <ohdonna_68@...> wrote: Susie, I think it's the rooster's comb, not the chicken's.
