Guest guest
Boy Howdy do I have an opinion on femoral nerve blocks! I was one of three paients who had a TKR with a femoral nerve block on the same day. My surgery took place about noon. The other two paients had good results with their nerve blocks. I had the only nerve block failure of the day. I appearently had a small amount of blood back up and form a clot in the line delivering the medication or I should say not delivering the medication, or it's possible the line was placed in the wrong location. Once the pain medication I had recieved for the TKR surgery wore off I was in agony. But as I have never had this type surgery before I had no clue as to what my pain level should be. I do remember thinking if this is what surgery feels like with a nerve block I don't know how anyone ever survived surgery before they had nerve blocks. By about 6 or 8 pm the medical staff on duty began to suspect I had a pain control problem. But there was no one on site at that hour with the authority to change my pain medication order and while this condition was extremly painful for me it was not life threatening. So NOTHING was done to correct the problem until about 8 oclock the next morning. If I had it to do over I would insist on a back up plan to better monitor patient conditions after normal hospital hours. And also if the anesthesiologist is not going to be available for after hour callbacks he should to leave authority with someone to authorize medication changes or to increase the medication as needed in the event the nerve block fails. PS A couple of days later later when the anesthesiologist came by the room, he avoided talking to me and seemed miffed that I had messed up his percentages for the nerve blocks. Poor guy, I almost feel his pain... NOT. Anyway good luck, when they work I hear those nerve blocks are very good. Guest guest
Dave, Sorry to hear you had such an awful problem w/ the nerve block. I can't believe they made you wait all that time for pain relief! After I had the nerve block removed and started to have significant pain the initial pain reliever stopped working after a couple fo days. They called SOMEONE and got the orders changed so that I could start working on getting relief. I have a rough time w/ narcotics, I build up resistance to the dosage levels quickly and they need to be raised. After a certain point I just live w/ what's left because I'm terrified of addiction. The told me that as long as you need narcotics you won't get addicted . . . but how do you know when that happens? Pat ----- > Boy Howdy do I have an opinion on femoral nerve > blocks!
