Guest guest
At first I used a "shower chair" like they have in nursing homes. Then I read that people were simply wrapping plastic bags around their legs and securing em with tape. Worked for me but I was careful not to surmerge my knees for a couple weeks. Oh, if she doesn't have a walker the VFW will loan you one for free for as long as you need it. There are tons of medical items for pennies on the dollar on Ebay too. Sherry TKR and the elderly Fox News Spoke with my son In AR and he said he caught the tail end of this story on the Fox news channel yesterday, but was unable to tell me anything about it. Did any of you catch the story? My mother has a date of Sept 5th to have both knees replaced at the age of 85. Of course this hinges on the out come of the cardiology report. If some of you out there around her age that has had TKR,I would love to hear how well you've done. She only has tub/shower facilities at home and I'm wondering if should install a shower stall for her, any thoughts on this?Thanksj
Guest guest
Well, I personally think someone 85 should not have both knees done at once. I realize her age but I was thankful I had one " good " leg for support. My thought would be how well can he do in therapy and her ability to walk. I certainly would have a discussion with her doctor.I first wanted both knees done at once but after having one done I was very glad I listened to my doctor and had them done one at a time. Guest guest
I guess there are many ways to look at this. One lot of surgery means only one anesthetic and that could be quite important, depending on the physical health of the person. For me I often worry about my mental health when under stress and wonder if one surgery would be better than two long periods recovering. In the end I believe everyone needs to make their own decisions, guided by the medical advice. Remember it is YOUR body not anyone elses, and you pay for any wrong decision, so it must be your personal decision. Hard decisions are hard to make, but I am better if I make them myself. Do what is good for you. Aussie Margaret RTHR 1990 revised 2004 Re: TKR and the elderly Fox News Well, I personally think someone 85 should not have both knees done at once. Guest guest
I am 61 and had my BTKR so I wouldn't have to go through it a second time. Now, I'm having problems and am terrified I may have to have one of em replaced again so if that is the case all the misery was not worth it and I have to go through it again maybe. I'm really worried. I shouldn't have this kind of pain at 8 months out. Sherry Re: TKR and the elderly Fox News Well, I personally think someone 85 should not have both knees done at once. Guest guest
I'm on my feet a lot. We live in a huge two story old farm house. I have pain in both legs when I first get up but the catching in the left knee is something I'll mention to my OS Tuesday. I have arthritis all over including my ankles and feet. My neck is almost non-existent and my chiropractor will no longer crack my neck for feea of it breaking SCARY. My spine is a real mess as well. No doubt I will occupy a wheel chair in the not terribly distant future as I have degenerative bone disease, osteoprosis and osteo arthritis. Sherry Hi Sherry, I'm 46 now but I was 45 when I had the knees and back done. I probably fell once a week before I had them done. It was crazy. I've fallen so many times I can't count and it got worse the worse my knees got. Then I had the one done and I still kept falling, not quite as bad though, then I had the other done and still, kept falling. I don't know how much of this was due to the pain meds. I had to learn how to pick my feet up again because I was used to waddling. It's so ironic but last night I lost my balance and fell against a TV tray and onto a recliner. It didn't hurt too much cause I've learned to protect my knees, but I was in such a strange position that it was hard to get up. I also have horses, dogs and foster dogs and cats, chickens, ducks, a goat, just think of it and I've had it. We just got another horse in July and I was doing so well on her but day before yesterday I was riding and she kinda bucked and my girth strap broke. Anyway I landed on my back still in the saddle and hit my head. My butt bone is very sore. I think I'm going to ask for a full body X-Ray, lol. I know I should probably not be riding but it's been my passion since I was 2 or 3, and both of my OS said it was OK. I need to build up a lot more muscles. I'm writing a novel again, but that's me. Well, she married and had 2 boys and when she was in the hospital with one of her sons she was diagnosed with MS. Many people go undiagnosed for many years . Please get tested for it. Your knees may not be the reason you're falling which is way to much. Sherry You know, I kind of was worried about that also. How do they test you for that. I've been tested for things so many times I don't remember what they were. I will mention it to them though. I have to go on Weds. They all knew that I fall a lot and it seems to be getting a lot better, hopefully. Maybe I should just take my chances and ride that horse.
