Guest guest
Hi Susie, I think they have put you and me in the " too hard " basket. I'm really not sure that a manipulation would work for a hip. My understanding is that manipulation is basically stretching the parts of the knee that the patient has ceased to properly use. Doing it under anesthetic allows those parts to be given a good stretch so the patient won't have so much pain and can start using it again. Usually the biggest problem with the hip is making sure people don't move it too far while it is healing. Risk of dislocation in the early stages is quite high. If you sit and walk you will end up taking the hip through quite a range. You do that many times a day. With knees people can protect them a bit and end up not bending it very much at all. You can't live very well if you don't bend your hip, but you could survive without bending your knee. The less you move it, the less you can move it, and the more difficult it gets to be able to use it next time. In Australia they don't give physio for hips, aside from initial mobilisation in hospital, but for knees they give a lot of physio. Now I have a personal opinion about that - I think hips need more physio than they get here, but it shows the difference. Susie, I'm wondering if they left us too long without listening to us, and now we have chronic pain. I'm wondering if they had listened earlier, really listened, our problems might have been able to be fixed. The trouble is that when a doctor makes a mistake, it is not them that has to live with the mistake, but us. I'm a bit sore and cranky. I took some pain killers last night, but they disrupt my sleep and don't kill the pain. So now I have spent most of the night tossing and turning, and this morning feel like " sh** " . By 4 am I had had enough and got up. Have a good day everyone Aussie Margaret RTHR 1990 revised 2004 Re: Manipulation under anesthesia HIP/SCAR TISSUE/Margaret and other hippies? | Hi Susie, | | I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. I know a bit about knees since I had those replaced. And I'm just learning about the hips since one day, I don't want too think when :-), those have to go. But perhaps Margaret and the other " hippies " can give you some advice. I'll put a notation in the subject line of this e-mail to see if we can get you an answer. | | One thing I do know, Susie, if you are in pain, you can seek a second opinion from a doctor who will communicate well with you. I remember you said your doctor doesn't make the effort to understand you, and that concerns me. Perhaps there is relief for you, whether it is a revision or pain management, if you find the right doctor. | | My wish for you in 2007 is that there is a surgeon or pain managment specialist near you in Gurnee, Illinois, who can help you feel better. My wish for me is that I can count my blessings and have an upbeat attitude like yours, Susie. | | Warm regards, | Donna | | | | Happy new year to you! | | | | Suzanne Snyder <juneflower63@...> wrote: | Hi Donna, | I had a Hip replacement done in April it will be seven years I have bad scar tissures I was wondering can do the Manipulation for you Hip ? Guest guest
The only type of manipulation that really helped me after my last hip surgery was to lay on my unaffected side w/ a towel rolled up and placed just below the last rib to stretch out the affected side as I had favored the bad side so much I had shortened that side of my torso because I stood like a flamingo w/ the hip elevated so that my hips weren't level. My legs were actually the same length but I walked like someone whose legs were not the same length. It makes for a lot more comfort when standing if you can stretch out that shortened side. You can tell if you have this problem by standing in front of full length mirror in underwear or a bathing suit. If you have the same situation I did your waist will indent more on one side than the other. I noticed this when swimming for PT after my first two hip replacements . . . and noticed the same situation in an exhibit at the sonian after a broken leg was poorly set. Hope this makes sense and helps someone. PatI'm really not sure that a manipulation would work for a hip.
Guest guest
margaret, what did you mean by " if you sit and walk you will take the hip through quite a range " - I haven't been told not to sit or walk and I'm doing lots of both, should I not be? Now you have got me worried. ann Re: Manipulation under anesthesia > HIP/SCAR TISSUE/Margaret and other hippies? > > > | Hi Susie, > | > | I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. Guest guest
Actually Susie, I think pain management might be a good idea. At least some of those pain management doctors give people hints on how to relax a little when in pain. I am waiting for an appointment for one myself. Guest guest
Sure Susie, Our health system is in a bit of a mess here. I was told I would get a letter in a couple of weeks in mid november. Still waiting. I'm wondering when a couple of weeks will be up? We are reliably informed by our State Premier that these kinds of things are not because Queensland Health is falling apart at the seams. I will let everyone know when I get an appointment.
