Guest guest
I have been reading about some of your experiences with manipulation so I read the paragraph in the knee replacement book about the subject. Do all people with TKR need manipulation? If not, what were the symptoms that lead to this? Did it help? Thanks Sandy LTKR Jan 15, 2007
Guest guest
Have you had an MRI and xrays? I had both, since the x-rays showed " something " in the spinal canal but were also dropped low enough to catch..ruh roh..the damaged hips. A follow up MRI showed some serious spinal issues, and those were addressed first through minimally invasive back surgery...the scar has now tightened down to maybe a little more than an inch..I can't SEE it so I " m judging by feel. As for sorting out pain, pain towards...here is a surprise..teh back of the body is more likely from spinal issues, pain in teh groin...hips. Unpredictable blasts of twist-you-up-into-a-screaming-pretzel..more often back, though a bone spur can snag teh same nerve with similar effect. Pain that takes place if you are standing up, legs straight and feet under you, the try to turn your knee to the outside...hip. Standing in teh same position and trying to turn just your toes out..hip. And if you find you are starting to walk kind of pigeon toed..hip. For me, back surgery first was the correct way to go, but it really was something of a coin toss. (Actually it was that the back surgery, I could go home teh same day, so that's why I went that way first.) I still have chronic pain, but at a considerably lower and not debilitating level. judith In a message dated 8/24/2009 11:31:14 A.M. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Good luck on the AS tomorrow. What is the purpose of the arthroscopic surgery; and is it a serious or painful? I'm curious as to the recovery time on that as well? Surgeons recommended that I have arthroscopic surgery on my lumbar spine, and I don't know much about it at all. I'm hesitant to having any type of surgery on my spine. I will google it to find out more, but hearing an explanation from someone who has been through it (sounds like more than once) is much appreciated. They recommended I have this before I go through with hip and knee replacement to see if the pain is coming from pinched nerves caused by disintegrating and bulging discs. S-Max -- manipulation I have returned from my OS appointment. I am just over 6 weeks postop. My ROM max is from 0 to 95 degrees. I have improved steadily throughout my recovery. I started off only at 55 degrees postop, so began much lower than what people usually leave the hospital with. Don't know why ROM was so low, but it was. I will be going in tomorrow for arthroscopic surgery and manipulation. Even though I continue to improve on my own, the " window " of opportunity for full ROM is closing fast. Six weeks is what my OS says is the time to consider this manipulation because of scar tissue. I hope I have stated that correctly. Excuse me if my terms are not exactly right. I am filling out forms, and getting ready to head back to the hospital tomorrow. I will spend one night there. OS feels surgery will be more like my previous arthroscopic surgeries. I am a bit sad that I was unable to achieve it on my own, but know that this hopefully will assist with increased ROM. I have also been able to change my meds to Naproxen, and take my narcotics only in the evening or if necessary. That will be a huge help. Yesterday I reduced my narcotics to nearly zero, with the OS okay. I was replacing them with extra strength Tylenol and Advil. My pain level was no different. I kept records of each day, and was able to show the OS. As a result, my narcotics will now be limited to evenings and for major pain issues. Thanks to those of you who have been supportive of my recovery. Now to get ready. Guest guest
Good luck Kim. I just finished reading up on this procedure. It's good to know there is a solution that will provide you with some relief. Rest up and report back when you are feeling better. Guest guest
S-Max As someone who has myriad back problems and have done much research on the subject I would be very weary of having back surgery for a bulging disk. That surgery is very rarely successful. There often is short term success with it but there are many horror stories of failed back surgery. Knee surgery is totally different from back surgery so a persons experience with that would not be of help to you. May I ask which disks are affected and where your pain is? Guest guest
Hi Kim, Good for you for increasing your ROM. That 40 degrees of improvement is quite an accomplishment. You say you are sad not to be able to achieve further ROM on you your own. But this isn¹t a race. I know others who had to have manipulation in spite of hard work. It¹s not a failure, it¹s another opportunity to get what you need and deserve to have in terms of recovery. You also have a lot more information now and more tools for your recovery. Wishing you the best and looking forward to hearing how things go after the manipulation. Guest guest
Hi Diane, I was concerned that your were yourself concerned about potentially needing a manipulation but not seeing the OS in time. I don¹t have any experience with this except second from this list but I would be inclined to get an appointment with the OS asap. What does the PT say about your situation? Best, Jackie Ps I like your sig. Guest guest
Hi Jackie My PT says my knee bend ROM problem is soft tissue and will eventually work it's way out with therapy at the clinic. I hope he's right. I do see the OS for my regular appointment in 2 weeks. I will worry it's not soon enough. But with a holiday in between times, it's not likely I could get in for an appointment before then. My knee still very swollen. Today is a bad day. I've been keeping it elevated. Kinda goes with the weather!!!! Cold and rainy. As for my signature.....I love knowing everything about everyone else's health. I think it takes my mind off of my problems for a while. My Mum jokingly says my sisters and I are ambulance chasers!!! She's 83 and wants to know everything, too! Mum has had 2 shoulders and 2 knees and is a dynamo to move around! I admire her sooo much! I think my sign-off has something to do with my being a Virgo, as well...'cause MY birthday is next Thursday, too! Us Virgo's are known to be precise, orderly, methodical ( and, if you ask my husband: nit-picking and fussy!!! LOL!) Here's to Sept 3!!!!!
