Hi

My name is Yogi Shah.I had a hip replacement on April 7.Came to home on Apr

11.

I was waking with aid of walker and crutches on the next day in Hospital.

Currently I walk a block with crutches.

I still have pain at the site of incision .I have pain in groin and calf

muscles.

Can any one let me know how long the pain in groin will last.

really having any problems nor need advice, I just wanted a place to

talk to other patients who've gone through this experience. Thanks for

Anne,

My wife had right THR on April 9, discharged on April 12 with a

walker. Follow up meeting this afternoon, April 24. SHe is 61 and

appears to be healing well....no pain meds the last two days (she

opted for Tramadol versus Vicodin).

It is definitely interesting in the differences in approach of each

surgeon to recovery, time to first appt, method of locomotion in

meantime, and so on.

Also my uses daily shots of Lovenox to ward off clotting while most

use warfarin, another less popular approach.

Hi Anne,

What kind of hip did you get--cemented or cementless? I'm getting a revision

next week

Yes, it is interesting how each surgeon seems to follow a different

protocol. I'm still taking Oxycodone - mostly at night because

sleeping is difficult - and Coumadin. I was hoping to be advanced to

a cane after a couple weeks but my doc was insistent on 2 crutches.

I'm getting along really well...my PT says I look great from her

perspective and to be careful not do over do it. The boredom has

definitely sunk in and I want to get out and do more things. I'm

thankful to have had this done in the spring when the weather makes a

big difference in attitude!

Best wishes to you and your wife!!

Hi ,

How was your first night home? I find the nights are the hardest.

Even though I can sleep on my unoperated side and my stomach, I have

yet to get a full night's sleep. Otherwise, I'm doing great...had my

3rd outing since coming home today. Did a little shopping and went

out for dinner with friends. Hopefully I won't " pay " for it

tomorrow!!! I'm sitting on ice as I type!! How is your pain level?

Take care-

Hi Anne and ,

I've just joined this group hoping to get some idea of what to expect

when my husband has his THR. It sounds like you two are doing well.

Could you tell me if either of you had the Anterior Approach?

I'm just wondering and trying to gather opinions of those gone

through the same as my hubby is facing.

Thank you,

Hi,

I had the posterior approach. I chose my surgeon because he offers

the minimally invasive procedure but at my first appt he told me he

would make the incision as long as necessary to minimize cutting

through muscle. After surgery, he told me to use 2 crutches for 4

weeks - and no cheating. My incision is quite long - probably 8

inches, but my physical therapists have been amazed at my muscle

strength. They said I am way above the curve at this point. I have

to think it's mostly due to the muscle-sparing he was able to do

during surgery. I also do not have the typical posterior

precautions...mine are just " no extremes " so I don't have to adhere

to the strict 90 degree rule.

I live in Boston and have access to great hospitals including Mass

General and Brigham & Womens but chose New England Baptist because

orthopedic surgery is basically all they do. I would advise doing

some research into finding a surgeon who 1) does a ton of hip

replacements 2) welcomes your questions and input into your own care

3) looks at you as an individual and is willing to do what is best

for you. The internet opens up so many possibilities for education

and exploration!

Good luck,

Anne

Thanks Anne for the response. Wow! Sounds like your surgeon did a

great job of keeping muscles in place.

Take care and thank you for the advice.

Hello again Annie:

My first night at home was far better than any night I spent in the

hospital. No vital signs checks or medication requirements every

couple of hours etc. I stayed up late, took a Vicodin, placed the

rubber divider between my legs and slept (on my back) for three full

hours. I then worked my way over on to my stmoach and finished out

the night in that position. That appears to be my pattern I'm going

to experience for a while yet.

I left my walker today for crutches and felt like some real progress

is being made. Pain control is still a bit of a problem and having

to change the dressing on the drain hole so frequently is a bit

unexpected. Now like many other people who have undergone this

procedure, some swelling has started. I guess ice and elevation will

hopefully take care of that situation. I believe a " PT " will be

coming to the house this week and I'm going to call the doctor for

some additionl enlightenment on the subject. Right now I have the

feeling being 74 is slowing me up some, but fortunately I don't

mentally relate to my age yet.

I'm so happy to know things are going well for you,m so keep up the

progress.

Best wishes

Just had THR Wednesday, April 30. Got home yesterday, Sunday May 4.

Good Ortho surgeon; Apparently all things went well. Followup Thurs, May 8.

My biggest problem is also how to get to sleep at night. Tried 2 different

LaZBoys and the family couch which is sorta' low. None are very satisfactory.

A couple Norcos during the night helped a bit, though. How did you sleep

on your stomach? I can't even imagine the mechanics. How long before

a decent night's sleep? Any other night sleeping hints?

Why are you not sleeping in bed? While I can nap occasionally in my

recliner, I definitely sleep in bed at night. I think they want you

to sleep flat out - part of my home care was to lay down flat for 30

min 3 times a day in addition to sleeping at night. I take Benadryl

to help me sleep but I'm mostly restless because I'm so aware of

turning over and keeping my operated leg from crossing over the

unoperated one. To get to your stomach, just continue rolling from

unoperated side onto your stomach with the pillow between your legs.

My PT says it's a good position to help with the stretch, so maybe

your PT can help you the first time. The only other tip is to wait

until you're really sleepy to go to bed.
